As the water cascaded down her back it soothed her aching muscles but her mind was far from calm. Why was Michael acting this way? It seemed almost as if he was angry with her but she couldn’t recall doing anything that could have warranted his wrath. Her mind then wandered to Andrea and she wondered if he had overheard their conversation still it didn’t add up to him being that angry and she wondered if someone had said something to him. When she came out of the bathroom, he wasn’t in the room.
After moisturizing her body, she put on a simple cotton dress that allowed enough room to fit around her bulge. She decided to brave the storm and go talk to Michael about whatever was bothering him. She found him in the gym in front of the punching bag with his boxer gloves on. He punched away at the heavy weight angrily as if he wished it were a real person he was punching. Imani stood watching him with a sinking feeling.
When he was finally done, he acknowledged her presence.
“You need something?” he asked haughtily as the sweat glistened on his toned arms and chest.
“Ohm,” she started unsure as she took tentative steps further into the room. “I know I asked this before but are you ok? Not that you don’t look fine,” she babbled. “It just seems like you’re angry about something. Maybe with me,” she finished looking at him.
“Did you plan to sleep with me on purpose?” he asked in a flat voice as he stared at her accusingly.
“What?” she asked disbelievingly.
“You heard me,” he said, his voice retaining the flatness.
“We’ve been over this before Michael,” she said her voice rising with anger at his accusation. “I never knew you before that night and if you recall you are the one who followed me and offered me a ride.”
“And yet that doesn’t change the fact that you got pregnant and were married shortly after your ex got married now does it?” So he did know.
“When were you planning on telling me that you were using me to get back at you’re ex? Is that why you were so eager for me to go to church with you? So that you could show him that you were one-up on him?”
“I can’t believe you would actually think that, I never deceived you Michael!” she cried in angst. “I’m sorry I never told you about Andre but it didn’t matter to me anymore once I got to know you,” she tried to reason. When he turned away from her she rushed towards him and took his hands in hers as she pleaded with him through her eyes. “Andre left me after two years for my cousin. Apparently he started dating her a year after we started. She knew about me but I was none the wiser. When he finally told me that he was leaving me for her it nearly tore me apart but somehow I managed to cope and then they sent me an invitation to their wedding. To add insult to injury it was on my birthday and the theme was the exact same thing we had discussed as I thought he was going to propose to me. I was coming from their reception when you saw me. So I didn’t plan it. But ever since that night I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. It was like my eyes were opened to the fact that I had lived a lie for two years and that there was better out there for me. You were my better.” She looked deep into his eyes as she spoke willing him to believe her words.
“Michael I lo…”
“Don’t,” he said uncoiling her hands from around his. “I can’t trust anything that comes out of your mouth Imani,” he said while staring into her eyes. All she saw was the blackness of his eyes void of all emotions. He had completely detached himself from the conversation and from her.
“I don’t need your words, they don’t mean anything. If you truly felt that way then you would have been honest with me from the beginning. I had to hear it from your ex that I was just the rebound guy because you couldn’t have him. Do you know how low that made me feel? I was starting to trust my feelings for you but now I don’t know.” Shaking his head in disappointment he headed for the door even as Imani pleaded with him to forgive her for the error.

He left. She heard the reverberating of the door as it slammed shut before she heard the roar of an engine. She fell to her knees in the foyer as her tears ran down her face like a waterfall. When she finally made it upstairs she was exhausted and despondent. She immediately fell asleep falling into a deep abyss of darkness.
“I love you,” he said staring into her eyes as his onyx colored irises reflected the very nature of the words he had just spoken to her.”
“I love you too Michael,” she said smiling up at him as he reached down to swing her into his arms. She felt light, like she was floating on air but suddenly there was a shift in the atmosphere and she felt like she was in a vacuum and all her air supply had been cut off. When she looked behind her, she saw Andre and Andrea laughing at her. When she turned back towards Michael, he wasn’t there. Instead her hands were held high and curved around an imaginary space. She then felt something trickling down the insides of her legs and when she looked down, her stomach was flat and blood was oozing down her legs. In pain she grasped her stomach as she crumpled on the floor.
“My baby,” she cried in anguish.
Imani woke up gasping for air as she grasped her belly. Pushing off the covers she looked down and was relieved to see that nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The only thing was that Michael was not beside her and she stayed up for the remainder of the night waiting for him but he never came home.
