“I have a meeting with the rest of the staff in half an hour and you are wasting my time,” she told him pointedly.

“I have a meeting with the board in twenty minutes, and I do not waste time.” He hauled her up out of the chair and put her to stand between his legs. She was wearing a chic olive green dress that managed to look elegant as well as classy revealing her baby bump. Her hair was piled on top of her head and secured by a jeweled comb, and she was wearing gold hoops as well as a gold chain and a delicate wristwatch he had given her.

“The door is open,” she pointed out.

“And being the person who calls most of the shots around here, no one would dare to interrupt us.” He teased her bottom lip with his teeth causing the spark to shiver through her body. “We have a function later at Senator Douglas’ place,” he told her in between nibbles.

“What is it for this time?” She moaned a little bit as he ran his tongue over her lip.

“Some worthy cause,” he murmured, forgetting everything else but her. His tongue touched hers, and she melted against him. He deepened the kiss and folded his arms around her body. It was the insistent ringing of her intercom that had her dragging herself away. She rested her forehead on his for a moment before moving out of his arms. “Get out,” she told him shakily.

With a lopsided grin, he sauntered from the room.

“Carrie Copeland,” she spoke into the intercom.

“Sorry to bother you, Carrie, but you have Emerson on the line,” the receptionist told her.

“Put him through.” It took awhile for her to stop shivering as she delved into work.

Linda Copeland knew her husband very well having been married to him for the past thirty years. Theirs had not been a love match but a putting together of two people who came from old money. She respected him and she knew he did the same for her, but she knew when he was cheating on her. She was brought up like most in her circle to look the other way when a husband was carrying on outside the marriage. After all, it was not becoming to create a scene and sometimes men needed a little dalliance on the side to keep the marriage going, but this one was going too far. He was gone almost every night claiming that he had business meetings, and she had come upon him several times having whispered phone conversations. She was not one to complain and nag, but this time she had to do something.
