“You drive a hard bargain,” he said with a chuckle, reaching for her. “Okay. Now for your wifely duty,” he whispered as he pulled her beneath him, his lips touching hers.

Sophia had fallen in love and with a married man at that. What had started out as a dangerous game was now something much more meaningful to her. She could not get William out of her mind and wanted to be with him every day. But she had to be careful. The McBrides were friends with the Copelands, and her parents would have a fit if they found out she was having an affair with William Copeland. She prowled her apartment as she waited for him to come to her. He had told her that they had to be very careful and that he would try and see her whenever he could. It was approaching Christmas and the weather had turned cold and nasty with soft slush coming down intermittently. She wished he would stay the night and hold her in his arms while she slept. Her heartbeat quickened as she heard him approaching. She was wearing a nude colored silk peignoir that hugged her and left nothing to the imagination. He always came to her at night, maybe telling his wife that he had a business meeting, but she did not care. She did not have neighbors because she had made sure of that by having her father buy her a property that was pretty secluded. She opened the door to admit him and reached for him as soon as he had shed his long cashmere jacket.

“Easy,” he told her with a laugh as her eager hands reached to pull his belt. “How about a drink?”

She pouted but went to do his bidding. She came back with the amber liquid in the glass and climbed onto his lap as he drank it down slowly.

The staff was wary around her at first. Being the wife of Patrick Copeland, they started thinking that she had been planted among them to spy on them. Marion Greaves, a long time employee, had worked her way up from receptionist to head of the PR department and was very good at her job. “I know you are Patrick’s wife, but this is my job and I am very proud of the strides I have taken. I am also very good at what I do and I don’t want anyone messing it up.”

Carrie had looked at the attractive brunette and told her point blank, “I am sure you have read the papers and realize that I was a working girl before I became Mrs. Carrie Copeland. I have no intention of messing with your job because I know what it is not to have a job.”

“I am sorry, Mrs. Copeland-”

“Oh, relax,” Carrie said waving her hand. “And it is Carrie. Now, show me the ropes.”

Marion looked at her with new respect and then she smiled as she relaxed. “We have a new software coming out and we have started the advertising campaign…”

It was the third day before he came by to check on her. Copeland Software was situated in a towering glass and chrome building that took up several blocks uptown. The ground floor was totally dedicated to reception and the security area, and the president and vice president’s suite of offices took up an entire floor. It was elegance personified and had the best technologies available. He stood there in the open doorway watching as she studied some sort of graph on one of the big screens in the corner of the room.

“Is this what you are getting paid for? Sitting here and watching TV?” The thick carpet muffled his steps as he made his way to her desk.

“What do you want, Patrick? I am working,” she said irritably.

“I am here to check up on my wife, what else?” He leaned casually against the edge of the desk near to her chair.
