Chapter 3

“What supplies do you need here?” Chalondra asked as she stood in the kitchen. She was going around to all the departments at the hotel to get the necessary things needed before she would forward the list to Nick.

“Here, Chalondra,” Mabel, one of the oldest kitchen staff, said as she passed a list to Chalondra.

“Thank you, Mabel,” Chalondra said with a smile.

“You’re welcome,” Mabel said as Chalondra scanned through the list. The list majorly contained food items, which were what she expected. The hotel had top-notch appliances for cooking; hence, appliances were no problem.

Chalondra turned to leave when Mabel stopped her by saying, “I got something for you for lunch.”

Chalondra turned to face her once more and smiled when Mabel stretched a food flask in her direction. Mabel had always been a sort of mother at the hotel. She had always doted on her since she started working at Carnero’s.

“Thank you,” Chalondra said as she accepted the flask.

“Your welcome. You look stressed out lately. You should take a break once in a while,” Mabel said with a concerned look.

“I know Mabel, and I will. I will be off this weekend, so I’ll be able to handle that,” Chalondra said.

“I see; any plans for the weekend?” Mabel asked.

“Yes, I have a hangout,” Chalondra said with a shrug, and Mabel beamed.

“One of the men finally stopped acting blind?” Mabel said as she winked at Chalondra. For the first few seconds, Chalondra couldn’t understand what she was talking about until it dawned on her at the last minute. Mabel thought she had plans worth a man.

“What? Mabel, I have a hangout with my friend. Do you remember her? Natasha?” Chalondra said as Mabel’s smile dropped. Mabel had tried to convince her about the possibility of finding true love despite Chalondra’s insistence that no such thing existed.

“Of course I do. I was just hoping you found a good man who sees how beautiful you are and knows your worth,” Mabel said with a sigh.

Obviously, that isn’t bound to happen because I seem to attract the wrong guys, Chalondra thought as her mind flashed to what had happened between her and David earlier that morning. She couldn’t deny that David was attractive, but he was wrong for her if he thought he could buy her with money.

“Mabel, I’ve told you countless times, I’m not interested in any man. I like my life the way it is, and I wouldn’t trade it for the stress of finding true love, which doesn’t exist,” Chalondra said. Big mistake, because she knew what was coming next. Mabel would tell her about how she had been married to Jerry for over thirty years and how their love grew stronger each passing day.

“That’s not true,” Mabel said as she got closer to Chalondra and placed her palm on her arm.

“Jerry and I met each other, and it was love at first sight,” Mabel said, and Chalondra almost rolled her eyes. She was happy for Mabel; at least, she was one of the lucky few who found a man who loves them. However, she wasn’t interested in having the same conversation over and over again.

“I know, Mabel, the birth of you is the rare case that love indeed exists. However, love might be for you, but it isn’t for me,” Chalondra said. She wasn’t ready for a man to treat her like a piece of trash.

“Oh, Chalondra,” Mabel said with a sigh.

“Mabel, I’m sorry to cut this short, but I need to get going,” Chalondra said while a dejected look crossed Mabel’s face. Chalondra knew Mabel wanted the best for her, but she wanted her to understand that not falling in love was her own reality.

“I promise to come around after I do the sweep,” Chalondra said as she raised the list she had been able to gather since she started her sweep.

“Okay,” Mabel said with a smile.

“Thank you for lunch,” Chalondra said as she smiled back.

“You’re welcome,” Mabel said before Chalondra left the kitchen. She wondered why it was difficult for people to accept that she wanted to have nothing to do with men. David’s behavior the previous day further strengthened her point. She made her way to her office to drop off the food flask before she left and went to the rest of the department and got the list. She took it to Nick’s office before she returned to her own.

Chalondra was tired by the time she returned to her office, but she knew better than to rest. She had a lot to see to in her desk, and she knew it would be late at night before she returned home.

She had just taken her seat when she realized she had left her phone in her office. She wasn’t bothered about this because she was certain the only person who could give her a call wouldn’t give her a call during work hours. However, her phone buzzed to inform her that she had missed a message or a phone call. Chalondra was puzzled as she grabbed her phone. She frowned when she saw two missed calls from an unknown number.

“It must be a mistake on the person’s part,” she mumbled before she left the phone lying on the desk once more and concentrated on the work at hand.

“We can continue this in our subsequent meeting,” David said as he stared at his potential new business partner, Mr. Henry.

“Of course. I would put your proposal into consideration, and we’ll continue from there,” Mr. Henry said, and David thought of what it would fetch the company if Mr. Henry agreed to his proposal without any alterations. David felt pleased that he was going to take the company to the next level. His dream was to make Murray & Co unrivaled if that were possible.

“I would love if you could do that,” David said as he rose to his feet.

“Thank you for your time,” Mr. Henry said as he also rose to his feet and stretched forth his palm for a handshake. David firmly gripped his hand before releasing it.

“You’re welcome. If you don’t mind, you can fix an appointment with my secretary after you are done with the proposal,” David said.

“I’ll do that,” Mr. Henry said.

“Have a nice day,” he added.

“And you too,” David said before Mr. Henry left. David took his seat once more and thought of how his day would be perfect. He had been unable to stop himself from giving Chalondra a call as soon as he had stepped into his office. He found himself eager to hear her soft voice, which had a hint of fire in it. He felt himself slowly come awake as he thought of what the combination of her voice could do to him if they were in a more personal setting, like a bedroom. David shook his head before he could grow deeper. Chalondra was driving him wild enough that he wasn’t able to think of anything else than her. He had been disappointed when she hadn’t answered her calls. Hence, the reason he was waiting for her to return her calls. David couldn’t believe he was waiting on a girl to return his calls. However, with Chalondra, it was different.

“I hope this lust would leave as soon as I have her in my bed,” David muttered as he shifted on his chair.
