Chapter 10

“David, we need to talk,” Chalondra said with heavy breathing as she held her phone to her ear. She stared at the note in her hand. At first, she hadn’t given them much thought, but now she had no choice but to do so. This was another note more threatening than the ones she had been receiving in the past.

“Is there a problem? Why do you sound this way?” David asked with concern.

“Yes, there is. I don’t know where to start from,” Chalondra said.

“Start anywhere,” David said. He was starting to panic.

“Well, for the past few weeks, I’ve been receiving threatening notes,” Chalondra said.

“What?” David exclaimed.

“Yes, I thought it was some prank, but now I don’t think it is. Now, the notes are more threatening,” Chalondra said.

“My goodness, what do they say?” David asked.

“Some person was telling me to stay away from their man. I don’t understand any of it.

I’m starting to get scared,” Chalondra said.

“Where are you?” David asked.

“I’m at my apartment,” Chalondra replied.

“Okay, I’m on my way. Call the cops,” David instructed.

“Okay,” Chalondra said.

“Make sure you lock all doors,” David said.

“I’ll do that,” Chalondra replied before she ended the call. She called 911 and waited for

them to arrive. She tensed when she heard a knock on the door.

“Chalondra?” she heard David call put from the other side of the door.

“I’m coming,” Chalondra said as she answered the door.

“Thank goodness,” David said after Chalondra opened the door. He pulled her into a hug as if to reassure himself of her safety.

“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” he asked as he pulled back and stared at her at arm’s length.

“I’m okay,” Chalondra said.

“Good,” He said just as two male cops arrived. Chalondra allowed them into the apartment. They asked her a couple of questions, and David attentively listened as Chalondra explained how she had been seeing the notes on the windscreen of her car and sometimes at the entrance of her door.

The cops asked a couple of questions and asked for the notes while Chalondra gave. David was alarmed that he had been unaware of all these.

“Do you have an idea of anyone who could be responsible for this?” one of them asked.

“No, I barely know anyone. I wonder why I’m the target of all these?”

“From what we could tell here, it seems this relates to the person you are currently seeing. Are you seeing anyone, Miss. Davies?” the other cop asked.

“She is seeing me,” David said, and the cops took down the note.

“Do you know who among your exes or past acquaintances could be responsible for this?” they asked, and David shook his head.

“I don’t know which of them is crazy enough to do this,” David said.

“Okay, we’ll look into all of these and pick up our investigation from there,” the cop said.

“Please do. If you have any information or anything you think I can use to help, please call me,” David said before he handed them his platinum card. He barely paid attention as their eyes widened when they realized who he was. He was more concerned about Chalondra at the moment than anything else.

“We’ll try our best and find out who is responsible for this,” they said.

“Please do,” David said before they left the apartment. “Do you want me to get you anything?” David asked as he took his seat beside Chalondra.

“No, I’m fine,” Chalondra said as she gave him a reassuring smile.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?” David asked with a frown.

“I didn’t know it would be this serious,” Chalondra said, and David sighed.

“You need to leave this place. It’s not safe here for you anymore,” David said as he scanned her apartment.

“Where do you suggest I go if I leave here?” Chalondra asked with arched brows.

“You can stay at my place,” David said with a shrug.

“You’re joking, right?” Chalondra said.

“No, I’m not. I have a big house anyway, and you’ll be safer over there than here,” David said.

“I don’t think this is that serious,” Chalondra said.

“It is, Chalondra. For all we know, some psycho is out there after your life, and you think this isn’t serious,” David said with an alarmed look.

“I can’t just up and leave,” Chalondra said with a skeptical look.

“Of course you can. Listen, I’m concerned about your welfare more than anything. I just want you to take moving in with me into consideration,” David said.

Chalondra stared at him and saw that he truly cared about her. “Okay, I’ll think about it,” Chalondra said, and David smiled.

“Please do,” he said before he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer to himself to comfort her.

“What do you mean, you have no traces yet?” David fired at the top in the other line. It was two weeks since they started their investigation, and they hadn’t come up with anything. This infuriated David, especially since Chalondra had refused to move in with him despite the fact that she had received more notes. Chalondra had just called him some minutes back that she had seen another one.

“We are trying our best. We will get back to you once we get anything,” he said.

“Be fast about it,” David said before he ended the call. He was infuriated that things were going out of control. He wished the culprit would be caught and everything would go back to the way it was. He dialed Chalondra’s number, and it didn’t take long before she answered the call.

“Hello, what did they say?” Chalondra said. David relayed everything the cops had told him.

“Would you at least consider moving in with me? I will be more at peace if you are within range,” David said with a sigh as he rubbed his forehead with his palm.

“Okay,” Chalondra said.

David almost sprang up from his chair in shock. “You mean it?” he asked to be sure he had heard correctly.

“Yes, you might be right, after all,” Chalondra said, and David smiled at this.

“Okay, I’ll come and pick you up. Pack the few things you can,” David said.

“Don’t worry about that. I’ll come over myself,” Chalondra said.

“Are you sure about that?” David asked.

“Yes,” Chalondra said.

“Okay, I’ll meet you at my place. Thank you for agreeing to this,” David said.

“Thank you for having me,” Chalondra said.

“You know I’ll do it over and over again,” David said.

Chalondra smiled at this. “I’ll talk to you later. I have some packing to do,” Chalondra said.

“Okay, take care of yourself,” David said before they ended the call. David was relieved that Chalondra had agreed. He felt relieved that he would be able to protect her.

David placed a call to his secretary on the intercom and informed her to cancel all of his appointments.

*****

Chalondra sighed as she ended the call. She couldn’t ignore the dangers to her life anymore. She had come to the point that she agreed with David, especially after the recent note.

YOUR COUNTDOWN STARTS NOW

Chalondra read the note again. She couldn’t make any sense of it. Hence, Chalondra wasted no time in getting her things. She packed her bag and was soon out of her apartment. Chalondra was locking her door when she felt like she was being watched. She glanced around and didn’t find anything unusual. She shrugged off the uneasy feeling she was starting to feel. She started making her way towards her car when she noticed the black van down the street. Everything about the van screamed suspicion, but she ignored it as she opened the back door of her car and dumped her duffel bag inside. She locked the door when she saw the door of the van open. She was curious when someone stepped out dressed in all black. Chalondra knew the person was dangerous when she saw the face fully covered with a mask. She was about to get down when the person raised his hand and fired a shot at Chalondra.

Chalondra didn’t have any time to react as the bullet hit her, and she passed out.
