Chapter 8

David was smiling as he thought of Chalondra. It had been days since they had gone on their last date. The only means of their communication were phone calls. He thought of the last conversation they had the previous night; they had talked about almost everything.

David was still thinking of this when he heard a commotion outside his office. He sat up with a frown and stared at the door.

He heard a shrill voice before the door burst open. He sat agape as Stephanie burst in alongside his secretary. “Let me go!”

“I’m sorry, sir. I told her she didn’t have an appointment, but she forced her way in,” David’s secretary mumbled. David understood she was trying to do her job. He had given her clear instructions not to allow any of his past flings in.

“Can you imagine that? Why would she restrict me from seeing my darling?” Stephanie said with a haughty look while she glared in David’s secretary’s direction. David almost let out a groan. Of all the people he had expected to pop in his office, Stephanie was the last person he thought he would see, not especially when she had rudely interrupted his date with Chalondra, and she was no longer welcome with him.

“It’s fine,” David said in his secretary’s direction. She nodded before she left David’s office. This pleased Stephanie as she sauntered towards David.

“I knew you would want to see me,” Stephanie said with a scoff.

“Stay right there,” David fired at her, and she paused with a questioning look on her face.

“First off, I have no intention of seeing you. I gave her strict instructions not to let anyone in. What are you doing here?” David fired at her while still giving her an angry look.

“Come on, I know you didn’t like the way I barged in, but what was I supposed to do?” she asked with a pout. “I know you are glad to see me,” Stephanie said as she advanced towards David once more.

“I said you should stay where you are,” David said with a dark voice that sent chills over Stephanie. “I thought I made myself clear that I don’t want to see you again?”

“You expect me to believe that? I can count the number of times you’ve said that, and you end up coming back to my arms,” Stephanie said as she flipped her hair.

“Those are one of the times I regret in my life,” David said as he glared at her.

“You don’t mean that,” Stephanie said as she shrugged.

“I mean every word I said,” David said with a hard look. “I don’t want to see you again, Stephanie. How difficult is it for you to get that?”

“What? You actually mean it?” Stephanie said with a frown.

“Yes, I do. Do well not to barge into my office again, else I’ll be forced to use security on you,” David said, and Stephanie gasped before she started chuckling.

“That’s not possible. You are mine, and I’m sure you don’t mean any of your words,” Stephanie said.

“How clear do you want me to be about this? I don’t want to see you again. What we had or never had is over,” David said as he held Stephanie’s gaze.

“Is this about the lady at the restaurant?” Stephanie asked with venom in her voice.

“It’s none of your business,” David said as he gave her a hard look.

“What!” Stephanie said. “You can’t do this to me. You’re going to get tired of her soon,” Stephanie said.

“Trust me, I won’t,” David said as he shrugged.

“Well, let’s wait and see,” Stephanie said.

“You can wait for a lifetime because even if things don’t work out between us, you are the last person I’ll return to,” David casually said as Stephanie brimmed with anger.

“We’ll see about that,” she said before she turned and stormed out of David’s office.

David sighed after she had let. He was happy to be free from one of the shackles of his past. He was still in the middle of this when his phone started ringing.

“Mom,” he answered the call after checking the caller ID.

“David!” his mom squealed in surprise.

“Good afternoon, how are you doing?”

“I didn’t know you cared about how I was doing, given the way you’ve been neglecting me for days.”

“You know that’s not true,” David said.

“It is,” Mrs. Murray said.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” David said, and Mrs. Murray chuckled.

“I understand,” she said to David’s surprise. “I haven’t seen you in any newspapers as of late, and that could mean two things. First, you are truly busy with work, or secondly, Diana was right,” Mrs. Murray said. Diana was one of her friends, and David knew this.

“Wait a minute, Diana was right about what?” David asked with a puzzled expression.

“Well, she saw you with a pleasant lady some days ago,” Mrs. Murray said, and David cursed under his breath.

“I also remember Gabrielle mentioned how a girl has you tied up,” she said, and David rolled his eyes.

“Your point, Mom?” David asked as he released an exasperated sigh.

“Is she the one? When do I get to meet her?” Mrs. Murray asked with excitement in her voice.

“Take it, slow, Mom,” David said with a frown. He knew where his mom was going with her questions. On a normal day, he would have been irritated about this, but with Chalondra, he didn’t really find it abhorrent. He had no idea the reason for this and didn’t attempt to find out.

“Spill it,” Mrs. Murray insisted.

“There is nothing to spill, Mom. Can you just drop this?” David asked.

“You know I won’t. I want to meet the woman responsible for the change in my son,” Mrs. Murray said.

“Could you please drop this?”

“Whatever? You aren’t out of this yet,” Mrs. Murray said, and David believed her words.

“When are you going to come and see me?” Mrs. Murray asked.

“Not anytime soon. I’m traveling to Los Angeles tomorrow to finalize a project, and it might take a couple of days,” David said.

“How about when you return?” Mrs. Murray asked.

“I have other plans,” David said as his mother sighed.

“I can’t believe I have a workaholic husband, and now my children are the same. I should have known better than to think any of you would give me the time of day,” Mrs. Murray whined.

“Mom, you know we have to work,” David said.

“You also have to make time out for your mother,” Mrs. Murray insisted.

“We had dinner at the house some weeks back,” David said.

“That was ages ago,” Mrs. Murray said, and David knew she wouldn’t let him off the hook so easily.

“Fine, I’ll come and see you one of these days,” David said, and that pleased Mrs. Murray.

“That’s what I want to hear. Do well to bring her,” Mrs. Murray said, and David groaned. He thought of how he should have known that his mother wouldn’t drop the topic.

“Mom!” David exclaimed.

“Fine, I’ll be expecting you,” Mrs. Murray said.

“Okay,” David said before he ended the call. David sighed in relief as he placed his phone on the table. He thought about how it would be on another level if he gave in to his mother’s demand and took Chalondra to meet her.

“No,” David said as he shook his head. He didn’t want that. What he had for Chalondra was pure desire.
