“Yes, I did. They are lovely,” Chalondra said as she beamed as the waiter returned with their orders.
“I’m glad you did,” David said.
“What was with the first tulips?” Chalondra asked, and David stopped digging into his food. He recalled Nick mentioning tulips as well.
“Is there a problem?” Chalondra asked with concern.
“Yes, it’s just that Nick mentioned that you received tulips, and I thought it was a mix-up,” David said.
“Wait a minute; you didn’t send the tulips?” Chalondra asked with a puzzled expression.
“No, I didn’t. I sent red roses. I personally got them and asked that they should be delivered to your office,” David said as Chalondra stared at him with a puzzled expression.
“I received the red roses, but I thought the tulips were also from you. I mean, you are the only person who has been sending me flowers lately,” Chalondra said as she tried to think of who could have sent the first flowers.
“I guess you have a secret admirer who has caught on to the fact that you are a priceless jewel,” David said as he held Chalondra’s gaze. Chalondra smiled at this before she shrugged. Then, another thing hit her – the fact that David had said it was Nick who told him about the tulips. “Did you say Nick told you about the flowers?” Chalondra asked to be sure she had heard correctly.
“Yes, he did,” David said as he shrugged. “He knows about us; trust me, I didn’t mean to tell him. He had his suspicions, and I played right into it. I’m sorry,” David said.
“It’s fine,” Chalondra said as she shrugged.
“Are you sure?” David asked.
“Yes,” Chalondra said as she gave David a reassuring smile, and he relaxed at this.
“I couldn’t take my mind off you all day,” David said.
“It’s the same thing for me,” Chalondra replied.
“What have you done to me?” David asked as he reached out to cup Chalondra’s cheek. They were still holding each other’s gaze when someone called out David’s name. David turned in the direction, and his eyes widened when he saw Stephanie Che. Chalondra took in the blond woman who looked like she had spent all her days under the knife.
“Stephanie, what are you doing here?” David asked with alarm while Chalondra watched the both of them with interest. Stephanie was one of David’s past flings who frequently returned and tried to stake claims on David.
“Come on, don’t be like that, darling,” she said as she leaned in to give David a kiss on the cheek while she ignored Chalondra.
David pulled back with an irritated look. “I’m here with my date,” David said with gritted teeth. It was at this point she briefly glanced in Chalondra’s direction. Stephanie stared at Chalondra in disdain before she returned her gaze on David.
“What are you doing here? When did you get back to town?” David asked with a puzzled expression.
“I got back three days ago and was planning to pay you a visit,” Stephanie said.
“Please don’t,” David said as Stephanie frowned.
“I know you don’t mean that. Anyways, I’ll leave you now; you know where to find me,” she said before she gave Chalondra a disgusted look once more, then she turned and left the same way she came.
“Wow! That was something,” Chalondra said in amusement. She wondered who Stephanie was and imagined she was one of David’s women. She envisioned what it would be like to have encounters with every woman in his past. However, she shoved the idea aside and decided to ignore David’s past and focus on the present.
“I’m sorry about that,” David said.
“It’s fine. I mean, given your record, I expect that once in a while,” Chalondra said. For the first time in years, David was ashamed of the way he had lived in the past. He had never thought much of his reckless ways until that moment.
“I promise; she won’t bother you again. I mean, I made myself clear to her,” David said.
“I’m not bothered about her. Now, tell me, how did your meeting go?” Chalondra asked.
David was amazed at how Chalondra was handling the whole situation in a flawless manner. He knew she was trying to change the topic and imagined if it was someone else, especially the women he had been with in the past. He imagined the tantrums that would have been thrown at that moment. He found himself admiring Chalondra even more. She is different, he thought as he stared at her.
“You meant it when you said we would be exclusive, right?” Chalondra asked with arched brows.
“Of course. I would never two-time you,” David said with an alarmed voice.
“It’s fine. I just wanted to be sure,” Chalondra said.
“Listen, Chalondra. Stephanie was an on and off thing for me in the past. She is part of my past and will remain that way,” David said. Chalondra stared at him for a while before she smiled and said,”Okay.”
“I’m assuming the meeting turned out well,” Chalondra added with a smile still on her face.
“Yes, it did. However, it isn’t what has me full of smiles,” David said while Chalondra had a puzzled expression.
“What is responsible for your smile?” Chalondra asked with intrigue.
“The question should be who is responsible for my smile, and the answer is you,” David said as he grinned at Chalondra.
Chalondra stared at David. She couldn’t help but think of how he effortlessly proved her wrong with her perceptions about him.
“You are different from what I thought you were,” Chalondra said.
“What about now?” David asked.
“I have a different perception about you,” Chalondra said.
“Do you mind telling me more about it?” David asked.

“You are a considerate man, and I can’t remember the last time a man treated me with this sort of care and attention,” Chalondra said.
“I’m trying the best I can to make you happy,” David said.
“I can see that. You are doing a brilliant job at it,” Chalondra said before they continued eating.
“Why me?” Chalondra suddenly asked.
“To be honest, I can’t explain. I can’t explain why I feel this pull between us,” David said, and Chalondra smiled as they went silent once more.
