Chalondra was about to ask him what his other reason was when the waiter joined them once more with their order. He placed it before them before he left them alone once more.

“I see. I thought you wanted a one-night stand,” Chalondra said.

“I will admit that at some point, that was all I wanted, but now I want more of you. I still want you, Chalondra,” David admitted, and Chalondra swallowed.

“David…” Chalondra started, “we barely know each other.”

“I know, and we can get to know each other,” David said. Neither of them concentrated on the sweet aroma of the food in front of them.

“What are you saying?” Chalondra asked.

“I’m saying we start over. Get to know each other and develop a mutual relationship,” David said while Chalondra contemplated this.

“I can’t promise you love. I’m just asking that we satisfy this need we have for each other, and when it’s fully assuaged, we can part ways on friendly terms,” David said, and Chalondra’s felt disappointed at the last part. She knew David wouldn’t offer her a relationship, and he was right about still wanting him. He also made a point in the fact about love. She wasn’t interested in that as well. She had tried it once and gotten burnt. At least back then, her ex had offered love, but David wasn’t deceiving her by offering her love. She wondered what a plain s*xual relationship with David would be like. Chalondra knew it was what she wanted. However, what disturbed her was if David was going to be seeing other women.

“Are you also offering exclusivity?” Chalondra asked. David was amazed Chalondra could ask him that question. He wondered how she couldn’t see that she was the only one that mattered to him and he was blind to other women. In fact, it seemed Chalondra was the only woman that existed, and he could only think of her.

“Of course,” David said. “I respect you too much,” he added, and Chalondra’s heart melted at this.

“Let’s have a toast,” David said with a smile as he felt relief. “To new beginnings,” he said as he raised his toast.

“To new beginnings,” Chalondra said with a smile as her wine glass clicked with David’s.

“Where do we start from in knowing ourselves?” David asked, and Chalondra smiled at the awkwardness she detected in his voice. It was obvious to her that the process of getting to know each other was a new thing for him.

“When last have you done this?” Chalondra asked, and David frowned.

“The getting to know each other thing,” Chalondra said as she dug into her food.

“To be honest, I did it once, and that was in high school,” David said, and this got Chalondra intrigued.

“What happened?”

“It taught me the lessons I needed,” David said as he shrugged. Chalondra was puzzled at this and wanted to know more about what David was saying. However, she saw the dark look that crossed his face as he told her about that one time in high school.

“I see,” Chalondra said.

“Yes, now tell me about your family. I noticed that not once did you make any mentions about them during our phone conversations,” David said.

“That’s because I don’t have one,” Chalondra said. It was David’s turn to become puzzled.

“I lost my parents while I was younger. They had a car crash, and that was it,” she said as she shrugged.

“I’m sorry about that,” David said as he saw the hurt on Chalondra’s face. He felt like reaching out to Chalondra across the table and giving her words of reassurance. He had no idea what it meant to lose a family member, but he knew it was a terrible experience for her. In fact, he didn’t want to imagine losing any of his family members.

“Thank you,” Chalondra said. “You talked about your siblings during one of our phone calls?”

“Yes,” David said.

“I never got to know what it felt like to have a sibling,” Chalondra said.

“It’s beautiful. We are all busy building our careers at the moment, but we had a lovely childhood,” David said.

“I can imagine,” Chalondra said with a smile. “You know, I was impressed when I saw reviews of how you took Murray & Co to top-notch within the span of years you took over,” Chalondra said as she recalled some of the articles she had read about David when she had been pining for him.

“You were reading up about me?” David said with a knowing grin. If Chalondra didn’t have darker skin, her blush would have been evident by then.

“It wasn’t exactly that way,” she said as she diverted her gaze from him.

“It’s fine. However, you should have just asked me whatever you wanted to know rather than go to the tabloids,” David said as he smiled.

“I wish I had the same privilege,” David said, and Chalondra frowned.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“I mean, I want to know more about you, but going to the tabloids isn’t an option,” David said.

“You do?” Chalondra asked in surprise. It still felt surreal that David was interested in things about her. She wondered what would happen when the s*xual desire faded away. That comes to an end to your relationship. Is it even a relationship? It’s more of a partnership.

“Of course, Chalondra. You intrigue me,” David said as he held her gaze. At that moment, they started feeling the effect they had on each other once more. He wanted to reach out and cup her jaw and feel the softness of her skin. “I have every detail of that night entrenched in my head,” David whispered as his palm covered Chalondra’s over the table. Chalondra sharply inhaled as she felt David’s hands against hers. The days she had missed his contact came rushing back to her. The air thickened as Chalondra’s eyes darkened with desire.

“David…” she whispered, and it sent a reaction off in David; he felt a growing ere*tion as he recalled how she had whispered his name when they had had s*x days back. David knew if care wasn’t taken, he would break his rule about having a mutual ground before having s*x again.

“Chalondra,” David whispered and let his palm linger on hers for a while before he abruptly pulled back.

“Tell me about the time you spent at the NBA,” Chalondra said.

“Those were my good days. I lived life to my fullest,” David said. They kept exchanging questions for a while before they decided to call it a day.

“Thank you for a wonderful night,” Chalondra said with a smile as they reached the side of her car.

“It’s my pleasure,” David said. They stared at each other in silence for the next few minutes. Chalondra was so close to telling David that they should forget about the part of taking things slow. She had a wild imagination of how their night should end.

“Goodnight, Chalondra,” David said, and this snapped Chalondra out of her reverie. David was aware that her mind had drifted elsewhere when he had seen her passion-glazed look. His best guess was that she had drifted to the night they had spent with each other. It had taken everything in him not to close the small space between them and passionately kiss her in the parking lot. If it were up to him, he didn’t care if everyone stared at him or if he appeared on the news on the tabloids the following day, but he respected Chalondra too much, and he wanted her comfortable. In fact, he didn’t want anything that would taint her in any way. The best option would be to stay far away from her, his subconscious whispered. However, David knew from experience that the idea wouldn’t work for him. He just couldn’t stay away, no matter how hard he tried.

“Goodnight, David,” Chalondra said, and David leaned in and placed a kiss on the side of her mouth. He heard her sharp intake of breath as he pulled away. It was apparent that she hadn’t been expecting the kiss.

Chalondra hurriedly opened the door and got in before she would give in to the temptation of leaning in to place a full kiss on his lips. David helped her shut the door and watched her start the ignition. Chalondra waved, and he returned it. David watched as Chalondra left before he walked to where he had parked his car. He got in and drove toward his apartment. He wasn’t the same way he had been when he had been going to the restaurant. Now, he was filled with excitement at the prospect of what was between him and Chalondra.
