“Of course, Chalondra! He is!” Natasha squealed. “Listen, I know your fears about these things, and I know you are trying to look out to me but trust me, I’m fine,” she said, and Chalondra relaxed at this.
“Okay, if you say so. I’m happy for you, girl! When is the wedding?” Chalondra asked.
“Slow down,” Natasha said as she chuckled.
“He only proposed a few minutes ago. Guess what? He did it at my place of work!” Natasha exclaimed, and Chalondra grinned.
“Wow!” Chalondra exclaimed.
“I know, right? I have to go now. We are going out to celebrate this. I’ll talk to you later,” Natasha rushed.
“Okay, take care of yourself,” Chalondra said.
“You should also take care of yourself,” Natasha said. They said their goodbyes before they ended the call.
“At least someone is having a splendid day,” Chalondra whispered with a smile. You could be having a splendid day too if you hadn’t run off, her subconscious whispered, but she shook her head. She decided to channel her thoughts on Natasha’s news. She briefly wondered if she could go down that path again. She didn’t think she had the heart; hence it was better if she stayed away from men. However, a thought lingered, and it was if she would be able to stay away from David.

“Get me the Trinity files,” David barked at his secretary, and she flinched. He was angry because it was now six days since Chalondra had left the yacht. It was six days since he had called her and she wasn’t answering. He knew she had been going to the hotel, and it seemed she wanted to cut all ties with him. This was driving him crazy, and he was letting out his anger on those around him. David watched as she skittered out of his office. He stared at the files before him with disinterest. Nothing mattered to him but hearing from Chalondra again. He brought out his phone and scrolled until he reached her number. His hand wavered over her contact as the temptation to call her grew. He was about to dial the number when his secretary entered the office once more.
“Here it is, sir,” she said as she passed the file to David. David gave her an irritated look, slightly annoyed that she had interrupted his thoughts.
He collected it from her, and she asked, “Will that be all, sir?”
“Yes,” David said before his secretary left his office. He didn’t know how long he could stay away. He needed an explanation; he needed to speak with Chalondra. He decided to give calling her another trial. Hence, he dialed Chalondra’s number and held his breath as he waited for her to answer her call. David couldn’t recall the last time he had waited on a lady. Chalondra broke all odds, and he didn’t care one bit as long as she answered her calls.
He felt disappointment wash through him when the call was about to end without Chalondra answering it. He was about to drop his phone when he heard, “Hello?”
Chalondra answered the call. David couldn’t help the excitement that was building up within him. He couldn’t believe he was hearing Chalondra’s voice again after what felt like months instead of days. Listening to her voice alone gave him a soothing relief.
“David?” Chalondra called out with a soft voice.
At this, David snapped out of his reverie and said, “Chalondra.”
“Good afternoon,” Chalondra said, and David felt like his heart wanted to burst out of his chest.
“We need to talk,” David said. He wasn’t interested in beating around the bush anymore.
“David…” Chalondra started to protest.
“Please don’t say no. We need to talk,” David said. He didn’t care that he was pleading, something he wasn’t accustomed to. However, he was ready to do it over and over again if it would get him to see Chalondra.
“David, I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Chalondra said, and David’s heart clenched.
“Yes, we do. It’s the least we can do since you left without an explanation,” David said. He thought of how he had tried to refresh his memory of that night on countless occasions. He had tried to figure out what he had done wrong because he had thought it was the reason for Chalondra’s hasty departure.
“About that…” Chalondra started. “I thought that was what you wanted. I mean, a no-string one-night stand,” Chalondra said, and David felt unease as Chalondra casually described the most passionate night he had ever had in his lifetime like it was like any other night. He didn’t like it one bit.
“Why would you think that way? You know what, are you at the hotel? I want us to see each other,” David said.
“What? Now?” Chalondra asked with surprise.
“Yes, Chalondra. I’m sure you will agree that we need to clear a few things up,” David said. “I’ve left you alone for the past few days because I wanted to give you time to get yourself together. Now, we need to talk,” David said.
“We can’t, not now. I’m at work, and it’s busy here,” Chalondra said, and David sighed.
“What about after work? I can pick you up or something,” David said, and Chalondra thought about this for a brief moment.
“Okay. However, I don’t want you to come and pick me up,” Chalondra said.
“Oh?”
“Yes, you can just send me the address of where we will be meeting, and I’ll join you,” she said.
“Okay,” David said. He wanted her to be as comfortable as possible. “Why don’t we do it this way? You can pick anywhere, and I’ll join you,” David said.
“Okay,” Chalondra said. David didn’t want to end the call just yet. He wanted to keep hearing Chalondra’s soft voice. They were silent for the next few seconds. It was obvious they had something to say to each other. It was on the tip of David’s mouth to tell Chalondra how he had been unable to function properly because he couldn’t get her out of his mind.
“Thank you for answering my call,” David said.
“You’re welcome,” Chalondra whispered. It took another few moments of silence before she said, “I have to go now,”

“Okay, I’ll see you this evening,” David said.
“Okay,” Chalondra responded before they said their goodbyes and ended the call. David felt better after this. It felt like Chalondra wiped away all of the aches he had been feeling for the past few days in a single phone call.

“Miss Davies, are you leaving already?” Mabel asked with a curious look. Chalondra turned to face her. She was about to step into the elevator when Mabel had called out for her.
“Yes, is there a problem?” Chalondra asked. She thought there was a problem at the kitchen she needed to attend to and almost let out a sigh of frustration at the thought of being a few minutes late to her date with David. She briefly thought of the ache she had felt for days from not hearing anything from him. She had thought he had moved to his next fling and had avoided going through tabloids because of the pain of seeing David with another woman. She had tried pushing him to the back of her mind and forgetting their night of passion together, but it had proven abortive because thoughts of David had kept ringing in her mind. She had tried distracting herself, but that hadn’t worked, especially since Natasha was busy with her fiancé. Hence, she had buried herself in work and had started leaving work late at night. She couldn’t count the number of times she had been to the VIP section of the club just to catch a glimpse of David. She had been disappointed and relieved that he hadn’t been in the club. She had been disappointed because it had made her unable to see David, and she had been relieved because it meant he wasn’t either other women.
