Chapter 5
“Arghh,” Chalondra groaned as she slowly awoke. She was glad that she didn’t have to go to work that day and she was going to be spending the day with Natasha. She had a lot to do in her apartment as well, and it seemed like she was going to have a long day. Chalondra sat up as she recalled what had happened the previous night. For the first time, David didn’t call her in the night. She wondered if he was already giving up on his pursuit. Somehow, the thought didn’t please her as it should. She had realized too late that she had grown used to receiving David’s messages every morning and night. She picked up her phone from the top of the dresser next to her bed and opened it to check if there was any message from David.
Disappointment ran through her when she saw no message or calls from him.
This is for the best. You don’t want to have anything to do with him. Why are you now sad? Chalondra soliloquized as she frowned. She realized that no other man had given her as much attention as David had given her for the past few days. He is doing all that as a ploy to get in your pants, her subconscious whispered.
She wondered if she should give David the benefit of the doubt like Natasha had suggested. She recalled what her search had come up with when she had decided to check him out online. Her curiosity had gotten the best of her that day. She had found out that he was a serial playboy. She had seen series of pictures of him on past tabloids with different women, and that was all the red flag she needed. Chalondra wondered why, despite all of this, she still wanted to hear from him.
She was still in her thoughts when her phone started ringing. She snapped out of it and stared at her phone. She started smiling before she could help herself when she checked the caller ID and realized it was David. Chalondra wondered why she was feeling excited that David hadn’t backed down. She calmed herself as she tried not to show her excitement. Her behavior was totally against the rules she had drummed in herself for years.
“Hello?”
“Chalondra, thank goodness you decided to answer your calls,” David said, and Chalondra frowned at his tone. He didn’t sound as arrogant as she was used to.
“David, good morning,” Chalondra said almost breathlessly. Chalondra wondered why David’s voice still had so much of an effect on her.
“Good morning, beautiful,” David said. “Did you receive the flowers I sent and my messages?”
“Yes, I did,” Chalondra said.
“I see,” David said, and there was silence on both ends. The only thing that could be heard through the phone was their heavy breathing.
“A date is all I ask for, Chalondra. I started off wrongly, and I would feel better making it up to you through a date,” David said calmly. Chalondra was surprised that David would admit that he was in the wrong and wanted to apologize to her. Natasha might have been right after all, she thought.
“Okay,” Chalondra said before she could help herself.
“Are you for real?” David said. The surprise was evident in his voice. Chalondra was also surprised with her decision, but there was no point in backing down. Asides from that, she didn’t have any intention to back down. She wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and hoped she wouldn’t end up regretting it.
“Yes,” Chalondra affirmed.
“Thank you,” David said, to Chalondra’s surprise.
“You’re welcome,” Chalondra replied.
“Do you have a place in mind? When do you want the date to be?”
“Well, I don’t have anywhere I would prefer. You can just pick from the restaurants around, but it would take until next week before we can have the date,” Chalondra said as she thought of her hangout and the busy week she knew she had ahead.
“That’s fine by me. I have a place in mind for a choice of restaurants. I’m sure you will like it,” David said.
“Okay, I’ll get back to you on when I’ll be free,” Chalondra said.
“Okay, good,” David replied. “Can I ask for something else?” David asked. Chalondra furrowed her brows in a puzzled expression.”Go ahead,” she said.
“Can you stop ignoring my calls? I mean, it won’t be a bad idea if we are neutral terms before the date. It will ease the awkwardness,” David said.
Chalondra contemplated this for a few seconds and realized he was right. “Okay.”
“Good,” David said before they both went silent.
“Okay, if that will be all, I guess we’ll talk later,” Chalondra said as she broke the silence.
“Okay,” David said.
“Bye,” Chalondra said.
“Bye,” David said before he ended the call. Chalondra was amazed at the other side of David she had never seen before. She had never thought that he had a soft side. She wondered if everything was a ploy to have her. Nevertheless, she wanted to see how it would go with him.
It’s only a harmless date. I’m sure he will be at the back of my memory after the date, she thought. She stood as she pushed David to the back of her mind. She wanted to get to work before she would go over to Natasha’s place.

“Oh my goodness! I can’t believe this,” Natasha screamed with excitement when Chalondra broke the news that she had agreed to go on a date with David. Chalondra was currently at her place for the hangout. They had eaten and were watching a movie when Natasha raised the issue. It had taken a few hours for Chalondra to clean up her apartment. She had been exhausted by the time she was done, and it had taken a shower to get her back to herself once more. It was late afternoon by the time she reached Natasha’s apartment.
“You better believe it because it is the truth,” Chalondra said as she tried to shrug it off like it was a usual occurrence.
“Wow!” Natasha exclaimed.
“Quit being dramatic about this. It’s just a harmless date,” Chalondra said as she rolled her eyes.
“Girl! I have to be dramatic about this! I can’t remember the last time you went on a date,” Natasha exclaimed.
“Technically, it’s not a romantic date. It’s just him trying to apologize for what he did,” Chalondra said, and Natasha raised her brows.

“Are you sure about that?” Natasha asked with raised brows.
“Yes, I am. What do you think this is? That I would involve myself in a romantic manner with David Murray?” Chalondra asked before Natasha’s eyes widened.
“Wait a minute, are we talking about the same David Murray. I mean the same hot, handsome man who is the CEO of Murray & Co?” Natasha said. “Oh my goodness!” Natasha screamed when Chalondra didn’t give her a response. “Girl, this is huge.”
“Calm down; you’ve forgotten to mention that he is a known playboy,” Chalondra said.
“Well, that aside,” Natasha said with a dismissive wave of her hand.
