Chalondra entered her apartment that evening. It was late at night. She had ensured that she had sorted the complaints she had on her desk before she had decided to head home. She was too tired to prepare dinner. Her body ached, and she thought of getting a massage at the spa of the hotel. Chalondra made her way to the kitchen and got herself a glass of juice. She made her way back to the living room and had just taken her seat when her phone started ringing. She hoped it wasn’t the unknown number that had called her four times in the past few hours. She brought her phone from her bag and checked the caller ID. It was like she had predicted it was the same unknown number. She had missed the previous calls because she had left her phone in the office while she had gone to sort out some things. Chalondra had been too busy to return the call and find out who was on the line.

“Hello?” Chalondra tentatively said as she answered the call. She frowned when she was met with silence. The only thing she could hear was the heavy breathing of the person on the other end.

“Hello?” she repeated with a frown and was about to hang up when she heard a strikingly familiar voice; “Chalondra.”

Her eyes widened when she realized who her unknown caller was. It was none other than David. She thought of how she should have known that he was her mysterious caller because she had given him her mobile number earlier that day. Chalondra hadn’t expected David to give her a call. She had given him her number because that had been her only chance of escape from him.

“David?” Chalondra said.

“Good evening,” David said.

“Good evening,” Chalondra replied.

“I thought you were intentionally avoiding my call,” David said, and Chalondra rolled her eyes.

“What if I was?” Chalondra asked.

“Then, I would have made my way to the hotel tomorrow morning, and I would be unavoidable by then,” David replied, and Chalondra gasped in shock.

“You wouldn’t do that,” Chalondra said with wide eyes. She wondered what everyone would think if they constantly saw him with her boss’ friend.

“Trust me, I can,” David said to Chalondra’s dismay.

“What do you want?” Chalondra asked.

“You know what I want. I’m sure you want it to. Why are you hell-bent on denying it?” David asked, and Chalondra groaned as she listened to him as he spoke in a self-confident manner.

“I have no idea what you are talking about,” Chalondra said.

“You see, there is the constant denial,” David said.

“What are you afraid of?” He asked.

“I’m not afraid of anything,” Chalondra fired in outrage. No man had ever spoken to her in a self-assured manner like David was currently doing. She didn’t understand why he found it hard to accept that she wasn’t on the table for him.

“Good, you wouldn’t mind having dinner with me,” David said.

“Nice try, but my answer is no. I would rather spend all day staring at paint dry than have dinner with you,” Chalondra said, and David chuckled. Hearing the vibration in his voice as he laughed sent a tingling sensation running through her. Chalondra clenched her teeth as she tried to erase the desire David arose in her just by hearing his voice. She wondered why she was reacting the way she was and thought if the reason was that she had been without a man for so long.

“Wow, that hurts,” David said even though he didn’t sound it.

“That tells you how much I don’t want to have anything to do with you. Take your attention to those who want it,” Chalondra said.

“I wish it were that easy,” David said, and Chalondra frowned as she wondered what he meant by the statement.

“I have to go now,” Chalondra said.

“You’re running away again. I never thought of you as a coward,” David said, and Chalondra gasped before rage took over.

“What did you just say?” she calmly asked, even though she was boiling. She was amazed at David’s audacity.

“Chalondra, all you’ve done since I made my proposal clear to you is run when the conversation becomes heated,” David said, and Chalondra frowned.

“I don’t run,” Chalondra said.

“Is that so? Do you want a list of the number of times you’ve run from having a conversation with me?” David asked, and Chalondra clenched her teeth.

“That should tell you I don’t want to have anything to do with you,” Chalondra said, and David chuckled.

“Don’t be so sure about that. I want you, Chalondra. There is no hiding it for me,” David said.

“Well, you can’t have me,” Chalondra said.

“Okay, fine,” David said, and Chalondra was surprised. David had been so persistent that Chalondra hadn’t expected him to give in so easily.

“Thank goodness,” Chalondra said as she heaved a sigh of relief. “Can we end the call now?” Chalondra asked.

“Not so fast,” David said, and she frowned.

“There is one thing I ask of you. If you do it, I’ll leave you alone,” David said, and this got Chalondra intrigued. Her mind briefly went to David’s first proposal and wondered if she should trust him with another request.

“Okay, shoot,” Chalondra said.

“If you agree to go on a date with me, I’ll leave you alone,” David said, and Chalondra frowned. She knew it sounded like an easy way out, but Chalondra knew better than to believe that there was an easy way out anywhere.

“I’m not interested in going on a date with you,” Chalondra said.

“Too bad, because that’s the only alternative I can offer,” David said.

“What? This is outrageous. Hey, can’t you get that I don’t want any of this?” Chalondra said with a perplexed look.

“Think about it, Chalondra,” David said.

“What?” Chalondra said as she ran her fingers through her hair.

“Have a good night’s rest. I’ll be waiting for your response. The dinner will held at any place of your choice to make you comfortable,” David said, and Chalondra gasped as he played deaf ears to all her protests.

“What!? Listen to me, David,” she started, but he cut in and said,

“Sweet dreams, Chalondra.” Then, he ended the call before she could continue her protest.

“The nerve of this man,” Chalondra fumed as she stared at her phone. She didn’t believe a man could be as infuriating as David. She wondered why he was hell-bent on taking her out when he could easily forget about her.

She was still thinking of this when her cell phone beeped, and she realized she had an incoming message.

I’m always available. All I need from you is a time and place. Sweet dreams, beautiful.

“Arrgh!” Chalondra grunted as she read the message from David. He was the stubbornest man she had ever seen. She had in the past met men who were interested in having a relationship with her, and she had turned them down without any issues. Now, David wasn’t interested in a relationship. It was clear he only wanted someone to have fun with, and he was giving her difficulties despite turning him down. She had no idea what to do about him.

She decided that if she ignored David, he would eventually give up and leave her alone. She smiled at the thought, but deep down, she doubted that would work. However, she still decided to go through with the plans.
