“I feel a little speechless, Amory,” Isabella replied softly as she sipped her wine. “It seems a shame that men don’t get rings, especially now that I have something so… bright.”

Amory smiled at Isabella, seeing the wine insider her was starting to take hold again after the food had held her intoxication at bay. “I need a new watch, so maybe you can help me pick out a new one sometime soon. We can imagine we’re Adventists buying engagement watches.”

They both laughed lightly as they continued to eat the fanciful plates in front of them. The waiter stopped by to fill their glasses with the red paired with their meals, and left them in comfortable silence as they tried to finish the food before it grew cold.

After finishing her decadent main course, Bella looked down at the pair of rings on her finger. It still felt alien to her. Her original band was designed to look like a willow branch knotted onto her ring finger. It paled to the finery adorning her hand now. The circular rock shimmered under the candlelight, which only enhanced the sun-like design of the ring. The pair of rings were harmonious in their designs, but the new ring eclipsed anything else Bella would ever put on her hand. She did not even want to consider the cost of this one piece of jewelry. She learned early on in their relationship it was best not to ask for the sake of her own sanity.

“A toast,” Isabella heard Amory say. “To our second beginning.”

“May it be better than the first,” Bella half-teased.

“How can we make it unforgettable?” Amory mused as he sipped his drink.

Bella knew in the back of her mind, but she hesitated to ask. “Well, we’re both in our thirties. You said yourself we’re a bit unconventional, but maybe our new adventure can be actually conventional. Most people would be thinking about their future with other people… little people that they made.”

“You mean children?” Amory laughed as he asked the clarifying question.

Bella nodded. “Working with kids for the last year made me really want to have some of my own. Amory, I knew we talked about us both wanting to have a family one day. It’s part of the reason we just went ahead and got married, but I just wanted to be sure that was what we wanted right now.”

“Bella.” Amory sighed as he took her hand under the table resting on the leather booth seat. “I never questioned myself when I asked you out. I did not wait to say it when I knew that I loved you. I knew it would be foolish to wait another day to marry you after you suggested it. Every day with you in my life proves those were good decisions. I’ve followed my heart every step of the way. We have the means. We have the time. We still have a bit of our youth left!”

Bella laughed. “Just a bit.”

“Let’s strike while the iron is hot! I would have more than one child if time permitted.”

“Well, twins do run in my family.”

“Good! Let’s hope for two! I can pay for two of everything anyway, no question. I would rather waste my money on my children than businesses or stocks or art that I do not even really like all that much. That won’t bring me happiness at the end of the day. You will, and maybe soon our kids will too.”

“So if I call up Elizabeth’s office in the morning to start making plans, you’ll be okay with it?”

Amory grinned. “I would call right now if they were open.”

Bella felt light, and without any worry of onlookers she kissed her wonderfully perfect husband.

When she finally pulled away, almost sad to let it end, Isabella finally asked, “Why don’t we get a coffee and something sweet now?”
