Isabella laughed once, but the drugs stopped her.

“Am…” Her throat was raspy, and she had very little power behind her voice.

Amory had no clue what was she was saying, but Isabella finally found the strength inside her to softly squeeze his hand still holding onto hers. The pressure of the touch squeezed his fingers together. It gave him a sweet relief.

His wife was going to be okay.

“Mr. Blake?” he heard behind him. An older man who looked like an aged Buddy Holly smiled back at him. “If I may introduce myself, I’m Dr. Frankel. I performed your wife’s Cesarean section.”

“Oh, well thank you,” Amory replied as he was unsure of how to respond.

“I just wanted to let you know your wife did beautifully. Her internal trauma was minimal, but enough that we did feel the infants needed to be removed. Dr. Torres’ body would have had the stamina to support a pregnancy and herself, but it seemed that your children were very well developed as it is. Based on their progression of development, your wife might have had gone into labor a month early anyway. We did have to give her some prolactin to encourage breast milk production, so if she starts leaking before she is fully coherent, you will know why.”

Amory felt a bit confused as the man kept talking, but his words did reassure him. He looked back at his wife, still rather drunk on medication. At home, she would move about in her sleep, but here she remained perfectly still. Amory wished she always could sleep so calmly.

“Did you inform her usual OBGYN, Dr. Harris?” Amory asked with the sudden realization of Elizabeth. He had forgotten his wife’s friend, but talk of birth and pregnancy brought her to mind.

“Actually, she works out of this hospital. It was a serendipitous moment that she was the second obstetrician on call tonight. I was the first, so I called Dr. Harris in this morning. She was able to assist with the birth, since this was quite a procedure. I have only seen four babies from one pregnancy one time previous to this birth. It’s actually a record for this particular hospital. You should know your children are local celebrities here.”

“How fitting for Los Angeles,” Amory joked. “I mean, I did want a big family, but I never thought I would have four at once.”

Dr. Frankel smiled. “Well, they’re all beautiful. You should feel proud.”

The man rested his hand on Amory’s shoulder, sending a soft wave of calm through him.

“Thank you, Dr. Frankel.”

“I’m happy to do it, Mr. Blake. Now, if you will excuse me I have another young mother of twins to visit before I head home.”

The two men said their goodbyes, and without a heartbeat between them Anne showed up with her small family in tow.

“Annie,” Amory sighed. “Thanks for coming.”

“I’ve got everything you need, and I picked up some breakfast burritos for us all. I saw a nice outdoor area on my way up.”

Amory hated to leave Isabella, but he knew what his wife would tell him.

“All right.” Amory smiled, hugging his sister, brother-in-law, and little nephew who was still half-asleep. “You guys, I have a lot to tell you.”
