“Sophie, if you need me, I’ll be there but I still don’t know how I feel about all of this,” Olivia replied.
“I can understand that, but I don’t want to go through this alone. I don’t know how I’ll tell my parents when the time comes and I’ll need you on my side when I do that,” she said.
“Of course, I’ll be on your side. I’m your best friend so you’re stuck with me. I’ll just need to get used to the idea of you having a baby that won’t be yours.”
“But one day when I do have a baby and I keep it then you’ll be an aunt and everything will be okay in the world, but right now, this is something I have to do,” Sophie said.
“Okay, fine. Just know that I don’t think I’ll ever see this the same way you do,” Olivia said as she shook her head.
“That’s fine by me. Let’s just have lunch as we normally do now that I got that out of the way,” Sophie said.
“Alright, alright, just don’t expect me to hold your head when you get morning sickness,” Olivia joked.
“Ha-ha, you’re so funny,” Sophie replied.
She could appreciate her friend being there for her even if she couldn’t understand why she was doing it. It wasn’t something she expected anyone to understand because although she was desperate for money, she also really wanted to help someone. She may have said that just to ease Olivia’s mind, but she had meant it. Sophie knew that some couples struggle to conceive a baby and even though she was nowhere near having a child of her own she couldn’t help but feel some sort of empowerment in the prospect of helping someone.
Of course, she knew that she still needed to go through a lot of tests just to see if she could be chosen but because she had a lot of extra time on her hands, she could do it. The worst part about giving her savings to her parents to pay the hospital bills was that her hours had been cut back dramatically for a few weeks, which meant her salary would take a huge hit too.
She tried not to think about the fact that if the surrogacy didn’t work out, she would have to continue looking for a second job. She knew she could do it if she had to, but she had worked her way up to store manager and still couldn’t believe that the store had cut her hours. She knew they were only doing it because sales had been low, but she feared that if the store didn’t pick up, she would lose her job completely.
“But, how are you?” Sophie asked Olivia.
“Oh, you know. Same old, same old. Nothing exciting happening with me. Nothing compared to you anyways,” she said.
“Nothing exciting at all?” Sophie asked.
“Nothing much. Work has been a little hectic but that’s about it,” she said.
“Well, that’s good to hear. Work and being busy is always a good thing,” Sophie replied.
Olivia nodded her head and she ordered something to eat and a coffee. Sophie did the same and quickly the conversation died between the two of them. They were fortunate enough to be great friends which meant they never had to force a conversation with each other.
Once they were finished with lunch Olivia invited Sophie back to her apartment.
“We can have a girls day, maybe paint our nails and put face masks on? Watch some movies? Come on, we haven’t had a girls night in ages,” Olivia begged.
Although she was right, Sophie wasn’t in the right space to be having a girls’ night. She could not stop thinking about the possibilities that the next day would bring. Susan from the agency had emailed her a confirmation for the next day to meet the couple and all she could think about was how she should act and what she should wear. There was no way she would be able to concentrate on anything else for the rest of the day.
“Oh, I know we haven’t, but I have so much on my mind right now. Please, let’s do it another time,” Sophie suggested.
“This is where it begins you know, first you’ve got too much going on and then the next you’ll have a pregnancy brain. I’ll never see you again after this,” Olivia moaned.
Sophie knew she was only joking and of course, she knew that wouldn’t happen but either way, she wanted to head home regardless.
“Well, I’ll schedule you in for 9 months from now then, how that works for you?” Sophie replied as she went along with her friend’s dramatics.
“Don’t say stuff like that because it’ll be true,” Olivia said as she slapped Sophie on her forearm.

“Then stop being so dramatic!”
“Okay, okay. I’ll see you soon then.”
“Yes, you’ll see me soon,” Sophie replied as she hugged her friend goodbye.
As she headed home, she thought about the next 9 months of her life. She knew nothing would be the same and having a baby would be a huge adjustment for her, especially for her body but she was prepared for it. She had done her research and she knew what she was getting into before she had even applied. She knew she would have to do a bunch of tests, physically and mentally, she just hoped that she would pass. Although having a baby meant giving up 9 months of her life for someone else, she also knew that after those 9 months she could do just about anything. The thought of finally opening her little bakery crossed her mind and a smile began to form across her face. She knew she was making the right decision, not just for herself but for whoever she was going to help. It was a selfish act and yet selfless at the same time which made her feel a lot better about it all.
Once she arrived home she went through her closet, making sure to pick out the best outfit she had so she looked the part for the meeting the next day.
