“So, how have you been? How is your mom doing?” Olivia asked.

“Oh, I’m fine. Mom is good too. She’s been at home for about a week now and my dad says she’s managing,” she replied.

“I’m so happy to hear that. Your mom is like, my second mom, so if anything happened, I would lose my mind,” Olivia said.

Sophie was the only child and having Olivia in her life made up for that. She had always wanted a younger sister and although Olivia was 28 and Sophie 29, she still felt like they were sisters. They did most things together, trips away and family events would always include the other one. They were almost inseparable.

“You and me both,” Sophie agreed.

“I can sense that there’s something on your mind though, so tell me. What’s wrong?” Olivia asked.

Sophie always hated that Oliva was so good at picking people’s emotions and thoughts so easily, there were times when Sophie wanted to keep something from Olivia, such as a surprise for her birthday but somehow, she would always pick up on the fact that Sophie was hiding something so she would never let the topic go until Sophie confessed.

“Well, nothing is wrong, but I’ve decided to do something, and I don’t know how well everyone will take it,” Sophie said nervously.

“Spill the beans. I won’t judge,” Olivia replied.

“Okay, well. You know how much I’m strap for cash right now, right?” Sophie asked.

“Yes, I know. And you know if you need any help, I’d be more than willing to help. Whatever you need.”

“I appreciate that I really do but you also know I would never ask for help. It’s just not who I am,” Sophie replied.

“Yes, well. If you ever do feel like asking, I’ll help however I can,” Olivia confirmed.

“Thank you but I think I have a way of making the money I need to be stable again,” Sophie said.

“Hmm, and what’s the plan?” Olivia asked as she looked over the menu, not looking at Sophie completely.

“A few weeks ago, I came across an ad from a surrogacy agency. They were looking for women who would not only be a surrogate but also donate their eggs and well, I sent an application,” Sophie admitted.

Olivia had put down the menu the moment she had heard the word surrogate, the shock of it sank in and left her face filled with surprise. Sophie knew that there was no better way of telling her friend and she sat prepared for whatever her friend would say.

“Okay, just give me a moment here,” Olivia said as she closed her eyes and rubbed her temples.

Sophie sat back and allowed her friend to process the information. She watched as Olivia looked at her, opening and closing her mouth as she tried to form a sentence.

“Alright. So, you’re telling me that you want to be a surrogate, as in carrying someone else’s child and on top of that you will also share half the child’s DNA but have nothing to do with the child at the end of the day? Do I understand correctly?” Olivia asked.

“Yes, that is correct,” Sophie said.

“Right. Sophie, you’re an idiot. You can’t seriously be okay with that? That’s crazy,” Olivia said as she shook her head.

“I know it sounds crazy but look at it this way. Firstly, I’ll get paid a lot of money to be a surrogate, but I’ll also get an added bonus because I’ll be using my own eggs. I can be stable for a while Olivia, I can help my parents financially for a while too,” she said.

“Sophie, how do you think your parents would feel if they found out their only daughter was paid to have her first child and then not keep it? Do you not think they would want a grandchild?” Olivia asked.

“But they’ll have a grandchild, eventually,” she replied.

“There is no way they would allow you to go through with this,” Olivia said.

“It’s my body, I really don’t need my parents’ permission to do anything with it. I could go get a tattoo right now and I wouldn’t need their permission. This is something I want to do. I mean, not only will I get a lot of money, but I’ll also be helping someone who can’t have a child on their own,” she argued.

“Yes, I understand that but it’s a huge responsibility. You’ll put your body through so much and then give away something that you’ve grown, something that is half of you,” Olivia said.

“But I don’t want a baby, not yet and I’m okay with going through all of it,” Sophie said.

Just as Olivia was about to reply, Sophie heard her phone go off in her bag. She quickly pulled her phone from her bag and looked to see what the notification was for, she was constantly worried it would be from her father. Relief washed over her as she saw a message from the surrogate agency, she had been selected and the person would like to meet her as soon as possible to get the ball rolling. Quickly, Sophie replied. She knew she would go through with it no matter what anyone said. It wasn’t about anyone else but her and the person who would end up with the child.

She had no idea who was interested in her, the agency hadn’t told her yet. She wondered if it was a young couple or an older couple, she was interested to see exactly who she would be helping.

“What if you say that now but when you’re about to pop, you change your mind?” Olivia asked.

“I won’t change my mind though, I know that for sure,” Sophie replied, “besides, it’s too late for me to change my mind. I’ve agreed to meet with the people that are interested in me,” Sophie said.

“Sophie, please think this through. This is crazy!”

“It’s only crazy because you don’t understand,” Sophie replied.

“No, it’s crazy because it’s just plain crazy. This is huge, I mean your entire body will change. Even after having the baby, you will never be the same,” Olivia said.

“I really hope you can get on board with this because I will really need you and I will really want you to be there for me during this,” she said.
