Chapter 3

Sophie.

The email flashed across Sophie’s laptop as she sat eating a slice of unbuttered toast in her kitchen. It wasn’t her choice to eat something so plain and so boring but unfortunately, she had no other choice, she hadn’t been able to afford her usual sandwich condiments considering she was on a very tight budget.

She could see the notification pop up on her screen and she watched as it hovered on her screen. She walked over to her laptop as quickly as she could, hoping it could be one of the many jobs she had applied to replying to her an email showing interest in her.

Sophie had applied for almost any job she could find, anything that could help her and her family. It was unfortunate that she had had to give up all of her savings to help her mom and dad. Of course, she didn’t mind helping them because they really needed her help, but she knew if she didn’t get a second job, she wouldn’t be able to stay afloat with her current lifestyle.

She had been lucky enough to have parents that did pretty much everything they could to make sure she had a good education and they had put everything they had in making sure she could further her education just so she would have the best life she could. Of course, she had excelled in school, putting the highest grades throughout her school career.

She hadn’t known that while her parents were getting her through school, they didn’t manage to keep any money aside for emergencies or retirement. She had promised to pay them back when she had gotten her first proper job, but they refused and while she spent years living a great life her parents had begun to struggle but never told her.

It was only in her 29th birthday that she had received a call from the hospital, informing her that her mother was in the hospital due to a stroke, she was stable but still needed to stay in the hospital for a few days. When she had rushed to the hospital to be at her mother’s side, her father pulled her aside and explained the situation to her. Almost begging her to help. He told her that they needed her help and of course, she didn’t hesitate when she agreed to pay for the hospital bills. Sadly, she had to use all of her savings and then some.

She would’ve given everything she owed to help her parents after everything they had done for her, but she knew that she would have to work hard to make the money she needed to pay her rent and all other bills. She had created a system of saving throughout the month so she’d never had to worry if anything happened, but she had also tried to save so she could pay her bills a lot easier, making sure to always have money available in case she overspent one month.

As she looked at her email, she was shocked to see that it wasn’t a potential job offer but a request for her to meet a possible surrogacy position.

Sophie had applied to be a surrogate on one of her darker days. Jumping to the opportunity of making a lot of money. She knew that being a surrogate would come at its own cost, but she was desperate. She hasn’t told anyone about it, she knew no one would understand and of course, she didn’t want her parents to know how broke she was. They had enough to worry about. Although it had been a few days since her mother had been discharged from the hospital, Sophie still had to make sure that not only she was financially stable but so were her parents. Her father had told her not to worry about them, but she couldn’t stop herself from wanting to make sure they were fine.

She read over the email a few times, making sure she was understanding the message before she got carried away. The message said that someone had looked at her profile and was interested in using her for a surrogacy.

She knew being a surrogate would be hard on anyone. Especially considering she had offered to use her own eggs in the process. Of course, she knew the child would be half hers but she wasn’t ready for children and so she knew that she could give the child up when the 9 months were done, especially when she thought that she was doing it for someone else and not herself.

When she had applied to be a surrogate, she had thought about it for a few days, making sure that once she had hit the send button, she was confident that she could go through with it if she was chosen in the end. She had applied thinking that she wouldn’t even be considered since she hadn’t heard back for the agency after she sent her application. She knew she was on their database but hadn’t received any interest.

Without thinking too much of it Sophie replied to the email, she didn’t want to miss her chance before it was too late. She paced up and down her kitchen as she waited for a reply. Her heart was pounding at the possibility of being financially secure for a while. She had done her research and she knew she could make a lot of money, enough to put back into her savings without worrying too much about making ends meet for a while.

Sophie worked as a store manager which brought in a decent paycheck every month, one that was enough to get her the things she wanted such as her house and her car which she loved as much as someone would love their first child. She could never complain about the life she had growing up, it wouldn’t be fair on her parents to do that. She knew just how hard they had worked to help her study and even though she had settled for a job that most people could get she knew her parents were still proud of her.

Sophie picked up her phone and dialed her best friend’s number, she had to tell her because she couldn’t tell her parents and she also needed someone to talk to.

“Hey, you,” Olivia said when she picked up the call.

“Hey there, not too busy to chat?” Sophie asked.

“Not at all. Do you want to meet for lunch?” she asked.

“I’m too broke for lunch,” Sophie replied.

“Well, it’s on me. So, meet me at the Starbucks near your place in 15 minutes,” her friend said.

“You’re an angel. I’ll see you soon!” she replied before she hung up.

She looked at herself in the mirror and decided it wasn’t worth getting dressed up, after all, she was about to be put temporarily off the market if she is chosen. She smiled at her reflection in the mirror before she opened her front door and walked out of her house. She had a really good feeling about the surrogacy possibility, and she knew that if she went through with it there would be no way of hiding it, especially considering Olivia liked to pop over unannounced a lot.

She quickly made her way to the Starbucks near her house. She was anxious to see Olivia, anxious to see what she would say about her decision. Sophie and Olivia had been friends for almost their whole lives, meeting when they were still in kindergarten. She knew Olivia wouldn’t be harsh about the idea of being a surrogate, but Sophie knew she would say something nonetheless.

She arrived at the Starbucks and found a place to sit while she waited for Olivia. She didn’t like to hide anything from Olivia and if she couldn’t tell anyone else, Olivia would be the one person who wouldn’t judge her.

“Hey,” Olivia said as she walked over to Sophie.

“Hey, you,” Sophie replied as she hugged her friend tightly.
