“He will learn one day, I hope,” he said.
As if he had heard them talking about him, Andre spotted Max making his way over to the table. Of course, he was a little late but that was just how Max was.
“Now before either of you say anything, I did arrive on time. I just had to wait for the valet,” he said as he sat down.
“You could’ve parked your own car. A lot of people do it these days,” Andre said.
“Why do it yourself when you can have someone do it for you?” Max countered.
“Oh, look at you. Making jobs available for people,” Andre joked.
“Why, of course,” Max replied with a grin, “mother, how are you?” he asked as he turned his attention to his mother.
“Oh, I’m fine dear,” she said.
For a few minutes, they all chatted meaninglessly about their lives as they hadn’t seen each other all together for a few weeks. Although Max and Andre always saw each other, they didn’t see their mother much.
“I guess I should tell you two why I organized this dinner. It wasn’t just to see you,” Andre said.
“Oh, you’ve just crushed my heart,” his mother teased. Andre laughed a bit and decided to get straight to the point. He knew the longer he put it off, the more nervous he would feel.
“Mom, you know I love you and you know I value your opinion and what I’m about to say needs to be taken seriously,” he said.
“Well don’t you sound extremely serious,” his mother said.
“Oh, just wait till you hear what he has to say,” Max said.
“Alright, you’ve got my full attention,” their mother said.
“Okay. I guess I should just be honest and open. I want a family, and I want a family now,” Andre said.
“Have you met someone?” his mother asked with joy. Andre knew his mother wanted him to settle down just as much as he wanted to.
“Not exactly, no. I’ve made the choice to take the step alone,” Andre said hesitantly.
“What do you mean, alone?” she asked.
“I’ve looked into surrogacy which seems to be the best option for me,” he replied.
“Surrogacy? You must be joking. Andre, you cannot do this. You can’t have a child by yourself,” she said.
“I told you this wouldn’t be a good idea,” Max said.
“Of course, it’s not a good idea. A child needs a mother and a father. You can’t do this alone,” their mother protested.
“Mom, I’m not asking for your permission. I know what I’m doing, I’m just letting you know that I am having a child,” Andre replied.
He knew he wouldn’t get any other answer than the one he got so he wasn’t surprised that his mother didn’t agree with his choice.
“Andre, please. You need to think this through properly,” she insisted.
“I have thought it through. I’ve thought everything through, and I have a plan. Trust me, I know what I’m doing,” he replied.
“Why can’t you just wait a few years? Meet a nice girl, get married and then have a child like normal people do,” she said.
“I don’t want to wait anymore. I’m done waiting so I’m going through with this. I hope you can accept it. I would like you to be part of the child’s life when it arrives,” he said.
Andre could see the shock on her face, and he braced himself for what she would say next. He knew it wouldn’t be any better than what she had already said, and he longed for the dinner to be over.
“I don’t think I can stand for this. Andre, you are not thinking about this properly. What happens when the child wants to know its mother? What about when you’re busy at work and the child needs to be looked after? What about all of these things?” she asked.
“Of course, I’ve thought about all of those things. I know what I’m going to do when all of those situations happen. Please, I’m a grown man,” he replied.
“You’re just acting stupid,” Max said.
“I’m not acting like anything. This is just something I need to do. Something I want to do and there’s nothing that’s going to stop me,” Andre said.

“Son, I respect your choices, I really do. But honestly this doesn’t sound like a good idea. Having a child is a huge responsibility,” his mother said.
“As I said, I didn’t ask for any opinions because this is going to happen. I just don’t want you to be shocked when you see a child around. Now let’s enjoy dinner, shall we?” Andre asked.
“Fine, but I’m not happy about this one,” his mother said. He could tell from her expression that there was no point in continuing the conversation, she would not see it from his side.
“I didn’t expect you to be happy about it, but I wanted you to know,” he replied as he dug into his plate of food.
He wanted the conversation to be done as he tried to divert the attention of everyone. Max rolled his eyes as he started to eat his steak. The conversation died completely for the rest of the night as they all ate in silence. Andre knew the conversation wouldn’t have gone any better than it did so he accepted the fact that his mother may not be a part of his child’s life.
