It had been a few days since her due day past and still she was not in labor. She had spoken to Andre about the things to do to induce labor naturally and as they tried everything as a team, she was still pregnant.
“I think we should go see our doctor, he’ll know better than we do,” Andre said.
“I completely agree. Let’s do it,” Sophie said. She wobbled to the bedroom to grab the overnight bag she had packed and soon they were on their way to the doctor. Sophie had started to feel uncomfortable as the days had ticked by and she was ready to do just about anything to have Quin.
They were 10 minutes away from their doctor’s office when Sophie’s water broke. She felt the release of pressure before she felt the wetness between her legs.
“Andre?” she asked.
“Yes, honey,” he murmured.
“My water just broke,” she whispered.
“What? Are you serious?” he asked, his voice completely shocked.
“Yes, I’m sure,” she replied.
“Okay, hold on,” he said.
He turned the car around at the first place he could as he headed for the hospital instead of the doctor’s room.
Sophie could feel the pressure build as she started to breathe slowly and calmly. She could tell Andre was nervous and worried as he drove and so she didn’t want to set him off although she had started to feel the pain from her contractions. She started to hum to herself as a way to distract herself, willing herself to stay strong until they arrived at the hospital. After what felt like a century, they were in the emergency parking section of the hospital.
Andre had managed to call ahead while they were in the car so there were already a group of doctors, nurses and their gynecologist was waiting when they arrived.
“How is everyone feeling?” the gynecologist asked.
“Oh, just great,” Sophie said as she winced from another contraction.
“That’s the spirit,” she replied, “don’t worry we’ll have you ready to go in no time, Andre can you just go check you and your wife in while we take her up to the delivery room?”
“Oh, okay. Will they tell me where to go after I’m done? I want to be there for my daughter’s birth,” he explained.
“Yes, someone will direct you,” she said.
“Okay, I’ll see you soon. I love you,” he said to Sophie as he gave her a quick kiss.
“I love you too,” she replied as she got placed in a wheelchair and wheeled away. Sophie continued to keep her breathing steady as she made her way through the hospital until she arrived at her room where she was changed and checked.
“So, you’re only 5 cm dilated which means we still have to wait a little longer before you can go into the delivery room,” her gynecologist said.
“Okay,” Sophie managed to reply before another contraction took over.
She closed her eyes as she tried to remain calm, she waited for Andre to join her.
Within a few minutes, he was at her side, holding her hand as she worked through the pain.
“You’re doing amazing,” Andre said softly at her side.
She smiled in return, too focused on her contractions to say anything in return. She couldn’t believe that her body had been made to handle so much pain as she tried to remain calm in front of Andre when in reality she wanted to scream out in pain. She had nothing to compare the pain to and even though she used to complain about her period pains being bad she knew they were nothing compared to how she felt at that moment.
The gynecologist came back after 30 minutes to check up on her where she announced that she was ready to go to the delivery room. Andre changed into scrubs and gloves as he followed the convoy down the hallway and into the delivery room. He sat at Sophie’s side as she was administered something for the pain before she had to start pushing.
Sophie screamed as she pushed, unable to keep it any longer. After a few pushes, there was a cry as the baby came into the world. Sophie and Andre looked at their baby as the doctor displayed her to them before they took her away to clean. Her cries echoed throughout the room and both Andre and Sophie cried at the sound.
“She’s finally here,” Andre whispered as he kissed Sophie.
“Finally,” she whispered back before she was handed her baby. Andre and Sophie both stared at Quin, her eyes were closed as she seemed to settle in Sophie’s arms.
“She’s perfect,” Andre said as he brushed his fingers gently across her cheek.
“She truly is,” Sophie agreed.
They were given a little more time with her before the nurse took her away and then Sophie was cleaned up and taken back to her room. Before they brought Quin back into the room Sophie fell asleep, her body completely drained and tired from the delivery. Andre sat at her side while he stared at Quin in her crib.
Sophie woke up to see Andre cradling their daughter as he whispered, I love you to her over and over again.
“Can I hold her?” Sophie asked.
Andre looked at her, shocked as he hadn’t noticed she was awake. His mouth transformed into a smile as he walked over to her bed.
“Of course, you can,” he said as he gently handed her the baby.
She cradled Quin in her arms and stared at her lovingly.

“She’s got your eyes,” she said to Andre as Quin looked at her with wide brown eyes.
“You have brown eyes too,” he laughed gently.
“Yes, but yours are lighter, just like hers,” she pointed out.
Sophie stroked Quin’s cheeks, feeling her soft fresh skin against her fingertips.
“She’s so beautiful it hurts,” she muttered.
