She moved carefully as to not wake up Andre as she wanted to make something to eat.
“Where are you going?” Andre’s sleepy voice asked from the darkness.
“I’m just going to make something to eat, go back to sleep,” Sophie said softly.
“No, let me come to help you. I’ also need to eat,” he replied as he shifted and got out of bed too.
Half asleep they made their way to the kitchen, both eager to eat anything they could make quickly so they could go back to bed as soon as possible.
“I can make us some mac and cheese?” Sophie asked as she looked through the cupboards. Everything else would require too much time and effort that neither of them had.
“Ooh, that sounds good to me. What can I do to help?” Andre asked.
“You can grate the cheese while I start on the pasta,” she replied.
Andre grabbed the cheese out of the fridge and started to grate it while Sophie got the pasta on the stove. Within 30 minutes the pasta was cooked, the cheese sauce made and poured into the pasta. They sat on the couch eating their pasta, both of them completely happy with the quick and easy meal.
Sophie could hear a ringing going off from the bedroom and realized that she was receiving a call. She put her bowl down and went to go answer her phone.
As she looked at the number on the screen, she saw Olivia’s name flashing at her, she only hoped her parents hadn’t told her anything, after all, they spoke all the time with or without Sophie around.
“Hey Olive,” Sophie said as she answered the call.
“Hey too you to,” her friend replied, her voice flat and tense.
“How are you?” she asked.
“Oh, me? I’m great. Although I just found out that my best friend is now in a relationship and pregnant with her boyfriend’s baby. I mean I know you said you weren’t going to tell your parents, but this is ridiculous,” Olivia said bitterly.
“I know it’s ridiculous and a little crazy but it’s true. I’m no longer Andre’s surrogate, I’m his girlfriend and we’re having the baby as a couple,” Sophie said, “I was going to tell you tomorrow. I was going to call you to meet for coffee so I could tell you.”
“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me all of this. You were so scared of telling your parents anything and yet you went to them first, I feel so unthought of,” Olivia said.
“I don’t want you to feel that way, not at all. I had just been with Andre and his family so I thought that it would be the right time to tell my parents, and besides I didn’t tell them everything and I hope you will let that be our secret,” Sophie said. She couldn’t risk her friend telling her parents the truth she had purposely left out.
“Of course, I won’t tell them. I just wish you had told me. Especially about you and Andre who you know, I will have to meet now,” she said.
“Well, would you like to go to dinner with us tomorrow night? I will tell you everything you want to know and then you can meet Andre too. Deal?” Sophie asked.
“Fine, it’s a deal and you better buy me something pretty to make up for your sh*tty move,” she replied.
“Stop being cheeky and I’ll think about it,” Sophie said with a laugh, “listen, I have to go. My dinner is getting cold but I will call you tomorrow so we can arrange a time for dinner.”
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow,” Olivia said.
“I’ll see you tomorrow. I love you just so you know so I would never leave you out purposely,” Sophie said.
“I know, I love you too,” Olivia replied. They said one final goodbye before hanging up.
Sophie smiled to herself, she knew she officially had nothing to hide from anyone anymore and she felt more at peace than she had at the beginning of the day. She didn’t expect her parents to tell Olivia about the news, but she supposed they probably thought she would always know considering Olivia and Sophie share everything.
She placed her phone on the bedside table and made her way back to the lounge where Andre sat, clearly eating a second bowl of pasta. It amazed Sophie that despite everything Andre ate he still managed to look so fit, his body looked as if he had been sculpted out of marble or something no matter how much food he ate in one sitting.
“Who was on the phone?” he asked.
“Olivia, she officially knows everything and has demanded to meet you,” Sophie said as she sat back on the couch and dug into her pasta again.
It had gone a little cold, but she was still hungry, so she didn’t care.
“I’m more than happy to meet your friend. At least now we can carry on without there being any sort of misunderstanding between us and those who care about us,” Andre said.
“Well, I said we can meet for dinner tomorrow, does that work for you?” she asked, “and yes, I’m glad everyone knows where we are now in our relationship. It makes moving forward that much easier.”
“Dinner tomorrow works perfectly, just let me know what time and where,” he replied.
“I was thinking we could just go together,” Sophie said.
“Oh, yes. Of course, sorry my brain is still half asleep and now is going into a food coma,” he joked.
“You are a silly man, but I love you anyway,” Sophie said.
The words slipped out of her mouth without her fully realizing what she was saying until they were out there between them. Her eyes widened in shock as she saw the look on Andre’s face, neither of them saw it coming.
“Sorry, um, I didn’t plan to say that,” she muttered when Andre didn’t say anything back.
“Sophie,” he said with a smile as he shuffled toward her, “I love you too.”
She felt the baby kick as if she were also excited to hear those three simple words. Sophie knew the baby loved Andre’s voice, she moved around almost every time he spoke which was also why Sophie knew that she could be a mother with Andre at her side, even if she hadn’t been ready in the beginning of their relationship.
“You do?” she asked.

She didn’t mean to sound so shocked, of course, she knew he liked her a lot, but she hadn’t expected him to love her even though she had meant it when she had said it. She knew that their relationship had developed differently than most other relationships, but she still loved what they had, and she knew that if the topic of marriage did come up between them, she would not hesitate in saying that she would marry him in a heartbeat.
“Of course, I do,” he replied as he kissed her.
They kissed passionately for a moment, completely overwhelmed by love and happiness. Sophie was so happy she could cry, and she almost did as she felt her eyes well up.
“Let’s go to bed,” she whispered.
Andre nodded his head in agreement. He quickly cleared away their bowls before leading Sophie back to their room. They kissed passionately, whispering the words over and over again to each other as they made love.
