Chapter 9

Sophie.

Sophie hadn’t seen her parents for almost 4 months and as the time flew by, she had no idea what they would say to her when they saw her with her baby bump. She knew she could’ve told them already, she could’ve told them at the last visit she had with them, but she was also too afraid to say anything at that point, not knowing how to even explain the pregnancy but as she and Andre got closer to her parent’s house, she wondered what she would say to them.

No matter how she tried to think of something to say that wouldn’t come off in a bad way she knew that unless they accepted the fact that she was having a baby they could possibly want nothing to do with her. However, she knew that even though she wasn’t married yet, they could still be happy with having a grandchild.

“Okay, we’re here. Are you ready?” Andre asked as they pulled up outside of her parent’s house.

“Almost, there’s just something else I just thought about now. My parents aren’t exactly well off and I always want to help them wherever I can so maybe we could give them my old house? I can continue to pay the rent on their behalf so they can have one less burden on their hands,” Sophie said.

She almost couldn’t believe that she hadn’t thought about it earlier. She could give something to her parents that could help them in the long run. They could save more money while they didn’t have to worry about paying rent anymore.

Sophie looked at Andre as he thought about her idea, she wasn’t sure how she’d continue to pay rent on her house considering she hadn’t found another job yet, but she would plan, anything to help her parents that had given her so much.

“You do realize you’re dating a billionaire, don’t you? I have no problem with buying the house and then you can gift it to your parents,” Andre said.

“Of course, I know I’m dating a billionaire but I’m not dating you because of your money so I can’t expect you to pay for everything,” Sophie replied.

She knew she could ask Andre for anything and he would give it to her, but she wasn’t with him because he had money. Yes, when she needed it the most it was a bonus but now things were different.

“You have to know by now that I want to provide for my family. That is my biggest dream which means that while you’re with me I will provide for you any way you need,” he replied, “I know you’re not with me for the money but I do have a lot of it so you might as well help me use it.”

Sophie thought about it for a moment. She had never thought about the fact that she could literally never work another day in her life while she was with Andre. He was serious about providing for his family, she had learned that about him when he had expressed his desire to have a child in the first place. She knew that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet someone as amazing as Andre which was why she liked him so much in the first place, and although she would deny it if anyone asked, she knew she was in love with him.

“Are you sure? I don’t want you to feel like I’m in this for the money,” she said.

Andre laughed before replying, “I know you’re not in this for the money so yes, I’m sure I want to buy your house so you can give it to your parents. If it makes you happy then I’ll do it,” he replied, confirming his earlier statement.

“We are the luckiest girls in the world,” Sophie said as she placed her hand on her stomach.

“As I am the luckiest man in the world,” Andre said as he leaned in and kissed her.

After their kiss, Sophie and Andre got out of the car and walked up the driveway that led to the front door of Sophie’s parent’s house.

Sophie knocked on the door and waited with the battered breath for her parent’s to answer. The door swung open and her mother stood before them.

“Hello, my dar-” she hadn’t finished her sentence yet as she took in Sophie, Andre and her bump.

“Hello, mom,” Sophie said as she moved forward to hug her mother.

For a moment her mother didn’t move before she hugged her back. Sophie could tell by the hug that she had already started to distance herself from her.

“Mom, this is Andre, my boyfriend,” she continued as she moved to showcase Andre. He extended his hand to shake her mother’s hand and although her mother still looked shocked, she reached out and shook his hand.

“Uhm, come on in,” she said as she cleared her throat, “your father is in the lounge.”

Sophie and Andre followed behind as they were led to the lounge and as her father saw the bump before anything else Sophie could tell she had a lot of explaining to do.

“I’m sure you’re both wondering about this,” Sophie said as she pointed to her belly. Neither of them said anything but answered her with a quick nod of their heads instead.

“Well, it all happened so unexpectedly and so quickly. Andre and I had just started dating and as mistakes would have it, we realized we messed up, however, after talking about it we decided that we both wanted it and wanted to be together through it all,” Sophie explained.

She knew she was being extremely dishonest, but she thought it was for the best. They would probably call her stupid for being a surrogate especially because she was doing it for them too. They would tell her that they aren’t her problem and the child is not supposed to look after the parents.

As she stood before her parents waiting for an answer from them Sophie could feel her heartbeat pounding in her chest, the suspense hung in the air around them like the smoke from a fire, heavy and thick.

“So, were you pregnant when you visited us last time?” her father asked.

“Yes, I was. I just didn’t know how to tell you,” she admitted. Yet, another lie.

“Did you think we would be upset that you are giving us a grandchild out of wedlock?” her mother asked.

“Yes,” she replied. It was true, she was worried about telling them about her having a baby in the first place considering she wasn’t married. They had always expressed the importance of marriage before babies.

“Darling,” her mother said as she took Sophie’s hands into her own, “of course, we would prefer it that you were married before giving us a grandchild but if you are sure that you and Andre are going to be together then you can still get married after the baby is here. It doesn’t matter if you do it backwards.”

She should’ve known that her mother would’ve said something along those lines but truthfully Sophie hadn’t thought about marriage yet. Of course, having a child was already something huge and her relationship with Andre was still new that she didn’t think it was the time to talk about or even think about marriage.
