“It was a hard choice you know, and I thought about it for a while before I made my decision, but I thought if I was approved and someone chose me then at least I could help in some way. I don’t know if I’ll ever have children of my own, but it would be nice to know that somewhere out there I could give someone something they want. If that makes sense,” she said.
“That does make sense and it’s also extremely kind of you. I don’t believe many people would be so selfless about something like this,” Andre replied.
“I suppose there is a little bit of selfishness behind it though. My mom recently suffered from a stroke and although she is fine the hospital bills were a lot more than what my parents could afford so I gave them all the money I had available to help them out which obviously left me in a bit of a pickle,” she explained.
Andre could tell that she was a little ashamed of her selfishness but as he thought about it, he still believed she was being selfless enough not to worry about it. She was still giving someone the gift of a child even if it worked out in her favor. He didn’t think that was selfish at all.
“To be honest, I think even if it’s to help you out you’re still helping other people out. Like there are so many people who would be grateful to you for doing something like this so don’t put yourself down about it just because you need something out of it too. I’m pretty sure most people do it for the money,” Andre said.
“I guess you’re right. I suppose I just feel like it should be done just to help others and not to help yourself in any sort of way,” she said.
“Well, the good thing is the fact that you are helping regardless, and I can say for one thing that I am happy that you chose to go through with it,” he replied.
Sophie smiled at him and Andre felt pleased that even though he had liked her in high school he could now have a conversation with her. He had pictured talking to her a number of times but never had the courage to do so and now that they were both needing each other it was a nice way to form a friendship.
“You have a point. I just don’t want people to think badly of me. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a good life, so I don’t want people to feel as if I have something to complain about,” she explained.
Andre could understand her worry, he had the same worry every day considering he was basically one of the richest people at his age but still wanted things that were hard to get. He couldn’t blame people for thinking badly of him if they ever hear him complain about wanting something, he couldn’t get but it didn’t make a difference regardless of how much money he had and how fortunate he was when it came to people judging other people it would never stop.
“People will judge you and think badly of you no matter what you do. You can be the nicest person alive and still someone will find something wrong with you so they can judge you. Sometimes you have to live with it,” he said.
“You’re right. I guess I’ve always just wanted to be liked enough that no one really pays me any attention. Well, technically I don’t want any bad attention,” she said.
“Things like that will always happen though. Sometimes you just have to say fu*k the haters and move on. Live life for yourself and no one else,” Andre replied.
The time went by a little faster than either of them had expected when the timer for the roast went off again.
“I guess it’s ready and so are we,” Sophie said as she went to the kitchen.
Andre helped carve the chicken as they sat at the table with the golden chicken between them along with the roasted vegetables. They dished up their food and dug in silently, they were starving as they devoured their plates. Andre went for a second helping of chicken while Sophie went for the roast potatoes they had cooked.
Andre felt hopeful that the rest of the time they would spend together would go smoothly. It seemed as if their personalities got on really well and they managed to have a pleasant conversation. He was still interested in learning more about Sophie, but he had a lot of time on his side for that.
Sophie stayed a little longer and helped with cleaning up the dishes.
“Thank you so much for dinner. I honestly thought this whole thing would be really weird, but I think everything will be just fine,” Sophie said as she started to walk to the separating door.
“I do believe you’re right. I think we’ll manage to pull this off very well,” Andre agreed as he stood just in front of her while she had her back to the door.
“Well, good night and I guess we’ll talk tomorrow,” Sophie said as she opened the door.

Andre leaned in to kiss her on the cheek, of course, he didn’t want to seem overly friendly, but he felt they had reached a comfortability between them where he could treat her like he would any other female friend.
Sophie had moved to go in for a hug but as they both moved in different directions their lips touched. It was a soft and quick kiss as they both pulled away immediately.
“I’m sorry, that wasn’t supposed to happen,” Andre said.
“It’s okay, accidents happen,” Sophie said as she gave Andre a quick kiss on the cheek before opening her door and closing it behind her.
Andre knew then that he had chosen the right person to go on his journey with.
