Chapter 4
Sophie.
When Sophie woke up the next day, she felt a sense of excitement and nervousness rush through her as she started to get ready for her meeting. She wanted to make sure she made a good impression, so she had chosen a simple white button-up shirt and blue jeans, she also decided to wear a black blazer. She wanted to look professional and well-dressed so she would leave with a good impression.
She still had no idea who the couple was, nor did she know their names and so as she left her house and made her way to the agency her heart started to pound. She didn’t know when the last time was, she had ever felt that nervous. In her car, she put on some relaxing music in the hopes that it would help keep her calm as she sat in a little morning traffic.
Sophie usually wasn’t the nervous type of person, but she couldn’t help it this time around. Although she had thought everything through, she still couldn’t help but wonder if she was doing the right thing, after all, she would be carrying someone else’s baby for 9 months and although she was sure she could handle it she still wondered if she had thought enough about it. She didn’t want to talk herself out of it, but she became to feel almost sick with nerves as she got closer to the agency. She was grateful she hadn’t eaten breakfast, if she had she may have already thrown it all up.
She arrived at the agency at 8:20 am, arriving 10 minutes early just to make sure she wouldn’t get lost or be late.
“Good morning, how can I help you?” a slim woman asked from behind the front desk.
“Hi there, I’m here to meet with Susan. I’m a little early,” Sophie said.
“Let me just give her a call to let her know you’re here. Please have a seat,” she replied as she gestured to the seats that were lined up against the far wall, directly facing the desk. Sophie nodded and walked quickly to the chairs before she took a seat.
She looked around at the office and like the fact that it felt homey and not like a clinic. She knew that behind the desk there was a set of doors that would lead to where everything happens, from the testing to the insemination. She wondered how long everything usually took and if she would end up being there the whole day getting tested. She knew that when she was tested, they would test her for everything from genetic diseases to sexually transmitted diseases. She had already done a few tests herself just to make sure that she knew for herself if she would pass. She didn’t want to make a fool of herself by thinking that she was fine and meanwhile she wasn’t.
She hadn’t been a promiscuous girl and it wasn’t as if she had many boyfriends either. She had been in a long-term relationship for 5 years from the age of 23 but since then she had been single for a few years, not wanting to let herself get hurt again.
“Sophie? Hi, I’m Susan. It’s such a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for coming in today,” a woman said as she extended her hand out to Sophie.
Standing up Sophie shook Susan’s hand with a smile.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you too. Thank you for having me,” she replied. She knew she probably wasn’t saying the right thing, but her nerves got the better of her.
“Please, come with me,” Susan said as she started to lead them through the doors behind the desk. With a deep breath, Sophie followed.
“Don’t be nervous, everything is going to be great. Mr. Bekker is very excited to meet you. We sent him a few candidates, but he was adamant that he wanted to meet you and only you,” Susan said.
Sophie couldn’t help but feel a little pressure as she let the news sink in. Susan didn’t say it was a couple and it was clear that she was the only one who had been picked. She couldn’t understand why that could be, surely there are a lot of other women out there she thought.
“It’s not a couple I’m meeting today?” she asked.
“Oh, no dear. It’s a young man who wants to start a family,” Susan replied.
“Is he gay?” Sophie asked, the words just slipped out of her mouth before she even registered what she was saying. Susan laughed at the question.
“No, he’s not gay,” she said with a smile.
“I’m so sorry. I don’t know why I even asked that,” Sophie replied.
“It’s completely normal to assume that so don’t worry about it. Mr. Bekker just wants his own family and he is determined to start it at all costs which of course is where you come in,” she said.
Sophie couldn’t believe that there was a young man that wanted to start a family and on his own. It didn’t sound like he had a partner. She didn’t know many men who would do the same.
“Is he a nice guy?” Sophie asked.
“Oh, yes, he is and he’s really nice to look at too,” Susan replied with a grin.
Sophie almost laughed out loud at the comment, she didn’t expect to start anything with the guy, after all, she was going to have his baby under a contract.
“Well, that’s good to know I suppose,” she replied.
“Are you ready?” Susan asked.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Sophie replied.
They had walked down a corridor until Susan had stopped in front of a set of doors. Sophie felt more confident, she didn’t feel as nervous as before now that she knew she would just be providing herself for a guy who wanted his own family. She found it rather sweet the more she thought about it. It wasn’t every day that she would meet someone so determined to go at it alone.
Susan pushed the doors open, revealing a desk with a man sitting calmly on one of the chairs going through a pile of papers.

“Mr. Bekker, this is Ms. Holland. Ms. Holland, this is Mr. Bekker,” Susan said as she gestured between the two strangers.
“Please, call me Andre,” he said as he stood up and extended his hand to Sophie.
“It’s nice to meet you. You can call me Sophie,” she said as she placed her hand in his for a quick handshake.
Susan wasn’t lying when she said that he was good-looking but the longer Sophie looked at him the more he looked familiar to her. She couldn’t place him, but she was certain they had met before.
“Let’s all have a seat so we can get started,” Susan said as she took a seat. Sophie and Andre did the same, “how is everyone feeling?”
