“Are you sick?” She asked carefully, her head tilted to the side. “You look like you threw up in my elevator before you got here.”

“I’m not sick today,” Ryan admitted as he scrubbed a lethargic palm across his face. “It’s just been a rough few days. Can you please just trust me when I say that?”

“Why should I trust you?” She countered.

“Because I’m too exhausted to tell you any sort of lie, Catherine,” Ryan’s eyes were soft at the edges as he took her hands in his. “I will explain everything to you when the time is right, I promise you that. In the meantime, can you please just accept the fact that I’m truly sorry and let me make it up to you?”

Catherine’s brows lifted in curiosity and she stepped back. “How do you plan on making it up to me?”

“I know you well enough to know you’ve probably done nothing but mull over everything that happened,” Ryan said with a small, growing smile. “You probably thought about if you had done something wrong, if I didn’t enjoy my time with you, if all I wanted was your money to further my own project. Am I right?”

“You might be,” Catherine cleared her throat as the intensity in Ryan’s stare brought her back to her chair. “What does that have to do with making it up to me?”

“I want you to relax.”

Ryan stepped forward and pressed his palms to the arms of Catherine’s chair in order to hover above her lips. Her breath fanned across his mouth and Catherine felt her body tremble again.

“Miss Goldberry!”

Jess’ enthusiastic voice rang out from behind Catherine’s closed office door, but before she managed to tell her she was busy, Jess had swung the door open to rush inside.

“I found what you were looking for and I know you told me to bring it directly—oh my God,” Jess gasped as she peered through the glass table and noted Ryan tucked underneath it. “I’m so sorry!” She exclaimed, turning a deep crimson and veering on her heels. “I should go, right? Should I go? I can tell you this another time.”

“It’s fine, Jess,” Catherine replied, obviously annoyed at the interruption.

Catherine’s assistant stayed facing the door as they both composed themselves and fixed their clothing as best as they could. An awkward silence took over the room until it was broken by Catherine clearing her throat.

“Just for future reference, please wait to be told it’s alright to come in before doing so,” Catherine said, turning a hardened gaze towards the manila envelope in Jess’ hands. “What’s that?”

“I got what you were looking for, Catherine, we found him,” beamed Jess, clearly proud of her accomplishments.

“You got who?” Ryan interjected, stepping forward and casting an inquisitive glance towards Catherine. “What were you doing while I was away?”

“I was doing what I needed to do,” she replied flatly before directing her attention back to her friend and assistant standing awkwardly before them. “I was beginning to think we hit a dead end.”
