Chapter 1
“The consumer panel results have come back and it’s showing that among one of the most requested and widely enjoyed products, is the long lasting Liquid Lipstick in the shade Pillow Mint,” the sound of a muffled voice made its presence known just in time for a smooth hand to rest on Catherine Goldberry’s shoulder. “Miss Goldberry?”
“Yes, I’m here,” she replied monotonously. “I’m merely listening to why we need to have a color that in the long run, isn’t going to sell to anyone but those with an addiction or who are artists for their jobs.”
The tension in the room thickened and all that could be heard was whispers.
Catherine Goldberry was a thirty year old, self made billionaire who claimed her fortune by founding Glacial Cosmetics. What once started off as a hobby for her and a way to make extra income to help pay her way through her Chemistry degree at the University of Denver, had become a full time job with a myriad of different responsibilities.
The beauty mogul’s hair was jet black and her eyes were a piercing shade of blue that, despite her warm nature, appeared chilling. Throughout her teenage years, she was always told that her eyes looked like ice and that became the inspiration behind her company’s name. Catherine was slender and average height for a woman of her age, even though she used heels to gift her with the leverage of having extra height. She was beautiful in every right. She harbored inner and outer beauty, though the vanity of the beauty industry focused solely on what was on the outside.
“I shouldn’t even be here,” she mused quietly.
“Miss Goldberry, if you would kindly take a look at the swatches, you will see that the new formulation is probably the best we’ve produced as of yet, and these are just samples,” Pete Thrush, Glacial Cosmetics’ head of marketing and research disclosed. “As mentioned, the consumer panel results were astonishing for this color and I think it’s best if we make a decision on what we want to market first—the matte or crème finish.”
The sound of the clock striking noon caused Catherine’s attention to drift to her cell phone that was vibrating off the table and her lips curved up into a distinctive smile. “Saved by the bell,” she said to herself as she pushed back the plastic chair she was sitting in and directed the room.
“Have the prototypes sent up to my office, I have a meeting I need to attend,” she stated flatly, a modicum of disinterest evident in her tone. “I’ll swatch them and make a decision. Keep the name ‘Pillow Mint’, it’s fitting and creative.”
Peter nodded his head silently and moved to instruct his assistants on what to do next.
The hall leading from the main lab at the Glacial Cosmetics Headquarters smelled clinical and Catherine wriggled her nose cutely as her heels clacked against the floor. She had always made it adamant that she wanted to remain in charge of most decision making when it came to new products, while delegating the smaller matters to those she trusted most. It was adamant to almost everyone that she was beginning to lose interest.
The sound of the elevator she was waiting for chimed and the heavy steel doors opened almost immediately and made room for her to enter. Inside, was a woman that Catherine had never seen before whom was standing next to a little girl, holding her hand.
“That must be her daughter,” Catherine thought as she turned a smile towards the child who was more dressed up than what she should be for her age. “It must be a nice feeling to not have to go home alone.” Having children wasn’t something that Catherine dwelled on all the time, but as she stood, standing beside a child with such warmth it began to dawn on her just how empty her life felt.
“Samantha, stop fidgeting. Ladies don’t fidget,” the woman snapped at the child as she started whining for the signature chime of the elevator to sound once again. “Children, right? You can’t ever get them to listen,” the mother spoke up again, this time directing her tone towards Catherine.
“Ah,” she replied shortly. “I’m actually not a mother, though I’ve heard it definitely has its challenges.”
When the elevator doors opened it caused the awkward tension in the small space to dissipate and Catherine gave a friendly wave towards the little girl whose eyes were glued on hers.

“Have a beautiful life,” Catherine thought to herself as she continued to watch the little girl that was beginning to remind her of herself skip across the marble tiled floors. “You’ll only be a kid once.”
The heavy steel doors closed once again and left Catherine trapped inside the small, silent and moving box. “Why do people have such irrational fears of elevators?” She asked herself as the third floor chimed and continued to move to the fourth. “It’s silent, cut off and it’s peaceful. I’d love to get stuck in here for a day.”
Catherine’s eyes fell shut and she inhaled a deep breath of air as she mentally prepared herself to arrive on the bustling floor of her office. She always felt overwhelmed when she stepped into the Lion’s Den, so to speak. She had questions thrown in every which direction, color samples, scents, packaging and a never ending list of buyers who wanted to carry the Glacial brand. Every Green Cosmetics company in the world wanted to work hand in hand with Glacial Cosmetics to reap the benefits of an all natural, paraben free, cruelty free and Colorado Springs water based product. It even seemed as if those companies that weren’t green before, changed their tune as soon as Catherine and Glacial Cosmetics exploded into the already booming beauty niche.
“It’s time,” Catherine breathed to herself as her eyes opened in time to meet the elevator doors opening and her assistant waiting patiently. “Venti skinny chai tea latte with extra foam, Jessica.”
“It’s already on your desk, Miss Goldberry and don’t worry, it’s fresh and hot,” Jessica said as she tucked a strand of vibrant red hair behind her ear and struggled to keep her pace alongside the ever moving Catherine. “We have a collection of new fragrances down in the lab that need your approval, along with some more colors for the new cream shadow line. The formula is based from the liquid lipsticks so the idea is to keep it in the hydra line.”
