“Good thing it’s not a generic name,” Catherine muttered sarcastically, her eyes narrowed toward the screen as she came across the first name on the list. “Alan Abernathy.”

Catherine’s hand began to cramp unnaturally as she found herself having written down the last names of at least thirty Alan’s and her throat closed in frustration.

“How am I supposed to find out which one of these Alan’s is causing a problem for Ryan and I?” She thought, looking towards the window in her door that showed Jess was still at her desk. Pressing the intercom again, Catherine called for the help of her assistant. “Jess can you come in here please?”

Jess arrived in Catherine’s office in less than a minute and she was wearing the same smile that she usually tried to greet Catherine with, much to Catherine’s dismay. They were friends for a long time and if Jess was unhappy with anything, Catherine wanted to know about it. She never wanted Jess to feel like she had to pretend to be happy about something because she may lose her job otherwise.

Catherine appreciated her honesty.

“Yes, Miss Goldberry?” Jess asked.

“You’ve known me long enough to call me Catherine,” she replied, standing up from her seat and joining Jess in the middle of the room. “I need you to look into this list for me.”

Catherine handed the list of Alan’s to Jess and watched as her brows pinched together in confusion. She undoubtedly had never heard Catherine mention the name ‘Alan’ before, and now it would suddenly become her duty to search what could potentially be every do-gooder Alan in Denver.

“Okay…” Jess said hesitantly. “What am I searching for?”

“Find out anything you can about them and find out which one of them has something in common with Ryan Metcalfe, other than the fact that they worked on the same organization. There must be something,” Catherine said. “One of these Alan’s is purposely making it difficult for us to find out who the developer is so we can put a stop to the development taking place at Snow Drift.”

“I’ll find out what I can,” Jess replied before she made her exit from the office.

For the first time during the day, a satisfied simper lifted the corner of Catherine’s mouth and she was reminded of just why she liked to be in charge of things and do them her way. No matter what, she always got the job done and while Ryan was probably out dealing with the Alan problem in a way that wouldn’t help, Catherine was preparing to deal with it in her own way.

“Every road block comes down eventually.”
