“Is this how you unwind?” he asked as he sat down.
There was some smooth Elvis Presley playing in the background and a film playing on the TV on mute. She was just sitting back with her bottle of wine under a soft cashmere blanket. The only thing that was missing was a good old Cuban cigar.
“Not usually. I binge watch shows unless I’m having a day like today. Then I come home, put in some tunes and open a bottle of wine that’s been sitting in my pantry for three years.”
He looked at her and took a sip of his wine. He didn’t expect what happened next. She must not have been that buzzed because she suddenly began throwing questions at him. It was hard to answer at first but soon he was just an open book. By the time he realized what was going on, he’d told her everything about himself. Everything about his childhood. His struggles. He didn’t even say what had brought him there. He was too deep in his feelings.
After another hour, they were two bottles of wine in and Douglas had expressed himself more to Tiffany in that hour than in all the hours he’d spent with therapists.

He didn’t know it but she was seeing him in a new light. Seeing him as the vulnerable man he was and not the rich, spoiled, arrogant prick the world thought him to be. He was just like your average Joe but with wounds that ran deeper than she could ever fathom.
“I’m sorry that I’ve been so difficult for you,” he said in a soft voice. “I know that you’ve been doing your best with me. For me.”
She smiled at him.
“You know, this is the first time a client has seen me as a real person,” she said in a soft voice. “First time someone has given me the respect I deserve because he didn’t just see me as some figurehead representing a company.”
Douglas looked at her and moved closer to where she was.
“You’re more than just a figurehead. You know that, right?” he asked in a whisper and she forced out a laugh as she tugged on her blanket.
“Sometimes I just think I’m expendable. The higher ups have made sure that I feel that way.”
This time it was Douglas who felt his heart going out to her.
“Tiffany,” he said in a soft voice as he moved closer to her and took her hand in his. He brought his other hand up and held her chin. “You’re not expendable. At least not to me. I see you.”
He was looking into her eyes as he gently stroked her cheek.
“You can be extremely sweet sometimes,” she said in a whisper. “It’s hard to imagine that you’re the same person I run into at work every time.”

“Well, not lately.”
Tiffany’s cheek grew warm as she looked at him.
“I know you said that we work together. That this can’t work with us,” he whispered but she didn’t care to hear what else he had to say. She leaned forward and brushed her lips against his. It was the softest kiss that revived everything she’d been burying deep inside her. She brought a hand up and held his cheek the same way he was holding hers before he leaned in and claimed her lips again.

Douglas was panting hard as he lay on her. He was hers but he wasn’t so sure she knew it. He was hers, mind body and soul. At that moment, he didn’t care that he hadn’t given her the message he was there to give her. All he cared about was that he’d finally had the deep connection so many people talked about.
I think I might be in love, he thought as he held her close.
