Chapter 1
Thursdays were generally slow days. It was so close to the end of the week but a terrible reminder that the long days and late nights weren’t over just yet. Especially if you worked in certain disciplines like Tiffany Meyers did. However, there was no such thing as being too close to the weekend for her. Every single day presented another opportunity for people to mess up. Another chance for people to make bad decisions that would cause entire countries to lose out. Another chance for some politician to post another terrible photo that would break the internet, and consequently almost end said person’s career. As a public relations consultant and specialist, Tiffany was a household name. She wasn’t just a fixer but also the person everyone thought of when their business went left. That was why, for her, there was no Monday, Thursday or Sunday. She just had days and nights. The only time she actually got any time to herself was when she went on vacation and she hadn’t done that in a long time. Not with the way emergencies kept on creeping up at every corner.
Tiffany was one of the minds behind the success of Entity, a leading public relations company in America. Its headquarters had moved from Minneapolis to New York City to accommodate the growing business from the political and business elite. Tiffany’s boss had actually considered opening another office in Washington for the sole purpose of dealing with all the political crises, but she had only a few people who could pull off as perfect a job as the team in New York did. Especially Tiffany. Sometimes Entity CEO—Virginia Deacon—made comments that made Tiffany feel like a teacher’s pet.
“If only we had more people like you,” Virginia would say.
“All Entity needs to go global is five more Tiffanys. That way we would have one in Asia, the Gulf, Eastern and Western Europe and a last one in Australia. The American Tiffany can handle the United States and Canada.”
The praise from her boss was never-ending and Tiffany loved it. She might feel like a teacher’s pet from time to time but she’d worked hard to earn it. Being a black woman working mostly with egotistical white males and otherwise privileged individuals wasn’t exactly easy. She’d learned early enough that she had to always be at the top of her game. That was how she’d mashed up Jessica Pearson from Suits and Olivia Pope from Scandal into one persona: Tiffany Meyers. It hadn’t been as easy as she would have wanted it to be. First of all, she wasn’t the classic size ten. She was a plus size woman, which already had her at a disadvantage with a lot of the people they worked with. As she found out early on in her career, all the men in public relations looked like former quarterbacks and the women looked like former cheerleaders. She’d felt a little out of place when she first got started and it was one of the hardest things she’d ever done in her life. It was especially difficult since back then she didn’t really have a wardrobe option that would make her colleagues take her seriously. Being a size 18 wasn’t exactly easy— particularly when it came to office wear. By the time she found out about plus size designers, she was almost giving up. But, once she stopped settling for what the department store had left over, Tiffany realized that she actually had more options than she could fathom. Suddenly, she wasn’t trying to squeeze her body in waist trainers and Spanx just so she could fit into what the stores stocked. For a long time she’d always been between conventional sizes.
Her friend Maggie introducing her to Grown and Sexy was the best thing that had happened to her. It had been almost eight years of being dressed by Grown and Sexy and so far, it was perfect. Tiffany had become an entirely different person. It was like she got an instant confidence boost. Suddenly, she was making more trips to the salon and nail spa and everyone noticed how different she was. She almost seemed to exude confidence, and why wouldn’t she? She was the woman who had it all. The woman who had the dream job to go with the no-nonsense personality. That was the narrative that got people to take her seriously and that was how Entity’s Tiffany Meyers came to be. The woman who never had a hair out of place or spotted an old manicure. She especially loved how she kept people wondering how she managed to keep up with her looks while she worked sixty-hour weeks. As far as she was concerned, maintaining the Superwoman lifestyle was how she was going to enable herself to move ahead in her career—and she was going to do anything to maintain it.
On that particular Thursday morning, Tiffany was sipping her Colombian dark roast when Ian, one of the company interns walked up to her office. Ian was also her go-to assistant. He was the most efficient assistant as far as she was concerned.
“There’s a meeting in the board room in five. You’re needed there.”
“What… I didn’t see anything on my planner,” Tiffany said and Ian shrugged.
“Yeah, I know. Virginia just called it.”
“Do you know what it’s about?” Tiffany asked, concerned as she got up.
“No, but knowing how this company works, it’s probably another billionaire in a crisis. That or another politician’s s*x tape just got leaked to the tabloids.”
Tiffany smiled.
“That’s what we are here for, right?”
She took another sip of her coffee.

“Have another one of these for me when we’re done with the meeting, would you?” she said as she walked out and Ian nodded.
“By the way, this weekend just got a whole lot harder,” he said and she stopped in her tracks and turned around slowly.
“What happened?”
“Xavier Morrison just posted a photo on his Instagram.”
Ian raised his phone and held it in front of Tiffany’s face and she felt the color draining from her face. Xavier Morrison was one of Entity’s clients and Tiffany had been handling his PR for as long as she could remember, but the billionaire dairy king of America was not making it easy on her. He was always in the middle of some scandal or another and this time he’d posted a photo of himself next to what looked like a dead rhino.
