Chapter 5

It had only been a few weeks but every single day Amelia woke up seemed to be worse than the last. She was having a very hard time waking up and an even harder time getting through to at least midday. She had always been a morning person but lately, it seemed like mornings were the hardest on her. For almost two weeks, Chad had been trying to get her to take some medication to combat her symptoms but Amelia was being stubborn. She did not want to do anything that would prove risky to her baby even though the medication was relatively safe.

“I have done my research Chad,” Amelia started as she sat on the bed on a Thursday morning. “There are like a million forums where women claim they have had some kind of problems as a direct result of using those drugs.”

“Don’t say it like that,” Chad said as he looked at her.

“Say it like what?” she asked.

“”Drugs,” Chad said in an almost disgusted tone. “It’s not like it’s crack or anything.”

“No it’s not but they are drugs.”

“Well, I think it would do us both a world of good if you would stop checking out those forums,” Chad pointed out.

“But these are women who have already gone through the experience. There is no reason for them to lie about everything,” she said.

“Yes, but the doctor did say that every pregnancy is different,” Chad said as he looked at her.

Amelia took a long deep breath.

“I’ll figure something out after my visit to the doctor,” she said as she climbed out of the bed.

“And when is that?”

“Later today. In the afternoon,” she said as she ran to the bathroom. Chad leaned back and sighed as he heard her puking. This was the second time that morning she was sick.

“Are you okay?” he called out.

“I’m fine,” she called out after a long minute. She flushed the toilet and rinsed out her mouth and brushed her teeth before she walked out of the bathroom. She leaned against the doorframe and looked at him. “By the way, there is no such thing as morning sickness. It is an all-day affair with me.” Chad walked up to where she was and looked at her.

“The pills…” he started before she rolled her eyes.

“Will you shut up about the damn pills already!” He looked at her and a smile played on his face. He had been warned that her condition would make her prone to mood swings and he was prepared for anything. “I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to snap at you,” she said. He pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head.

“Don’t be,” he said. “So, why didn’t you tell me about the doctor’s appointment?” he asked.

She shrugged.

“You were going to that appointment and I didn’t really want you to miss out because of me,” she said.

“Missing out on the chance to see my baby’s first photograph could never be any reason…” he shook his head. He didn’t have the right words to put what he had in mind. “I have to be there. Nothing is more important to me.” He pulled away from her and looked into her eyes. “I will make time to be there for my family and still make the interview.”

Amelia smiled warmly.

“What did I ever do to deserve you?” she asked in a soft voice.

“Nothing. Nothing at all.” He touched the side of her face. “You were just Amelia Gold.”

She looked at him and brought an arm up to hold the back of his neck.

“You are too good to me,” she said in a whisper. “Would it be too much to ask if I asked you to step into the shower with me?”

“I would love it but you are going to be late.”

“Already blaming the baby.” He laid down next to her and sighed when he saw the clock. “Someone is very, very late,” he announced in a warning tone. She pulled herself out of bed and looked at him.
