Chapter 9

It had been two weeks since Chantal and Michael had started dating and it was all just one happy moment after another. She had never thought that she could ever be so satisfied with the person that she was dating but clearly this was the case with her and Michael.

However, she was still a little uncertain. She knew he thought he was being genuine with her but she couldn’t shake the suspicion that he was treating her like a pill, like medicine that he would use to get over his ex. He might even be doing it without realizing it, in fact Chantal was positive that if he was doing this he would be doing it without even realizing what he was doing.

She wanted to discuss this with him but she didn’t want to spook him or scare him away. She didn’t want him to feel like she was suspecting him of things that made no logical sense whatsoever. After all, what evidence did she have that he was only in this to get over his past trauma? He had always been completely and utterly genuine with her. He had always treated her with the utmost respect. He had always made her feel like she was the only person in the room whenever they were together. Why should she suspect him of doing something that was so heinous if, in all that he did, he showed her that he really did care about her, that he really did feel like she was the most special person in his life and that she was worthy of all of the love and affection that he had to give?

She didn’t know how to go about it, so she decided to just go along for the ride. She decided that if things went bad she would deal with it when the time came. There was no point in being so concerned about something when there was nothing she could do about it. Raising the matter with Michael would only spoil what they had. Him using her as a pill to get better was a possibility, but if she raised this point with him and asked him if it was true then the fact that their relationship would immediately become a lot less rosy was a certainty not a possibility, whether what she suspected about Michael was true or not.

Hence, the best thing to do right now was to enjoy what she had, because if on the off chance this was not real, that this was just a way for Michael to cope with what he had gone through, at least she would have more memories of all of the happy times that they had shared because she would have allowed it to go on for a longer period of time. She was not the kind of person to complain or moan when there was nothing that could possibly be done about a certain situation. She decided to just enjoy herself for as long as she possibly could. It was, by far, the best option, and it was one that would allow her to be happy for a far longer period of time, so she decided that she would enjoy herself for as long as possible.

However, something happened that changed everything. Chantal got a call from her boss, a rather unsavory man called Vince. He was a very tough boss, expecting nothing but the best from his girls and if he ever got anything but the very best according to his often arbitrary standards then the result could be rather dangerous for the girls in question.

Chantal was a little nervous when she looked at her phone and saw that he was calling. Vince never called unless something had gone wrong. He only ever called when he had bad news to give, or when one of the girls had done something that she was not supposed to do. Chantal’s heart was pounding as she took the phone and tapped the answer button. She knew what this was going to be about. She wanted to run away somehow. She wanted to make it so that she would not have to face this incredibly difficult situation. However, she knew that there was nothing whatsoever that she could do right now. She was going to have to deal with this situation as best as she could. She was going to have to face it because if she didn’t, the fall out would end up being far, far worse.

“Hello?” she said, putting the phone to her ear.

“Jasmine,” said Vince. He always insisted on calling the girls by their pseudonyms. Chantal hated that. It was his way of dehumanizing his girls and making them feel like they were not people but objects.

“Yes Vince,” said Chantal curtly. She was not going to be rude to her boss but she sure as hell was not going to be polite either. She didn’t owe that to him, he certainly hadn’t earned it. She would be as professional as she could be, reserving any formalities or any expressions of even the mildest form of expressions of affection or familiarity.

“You’ve been dating a client,” said Vince. “We have a recording of you giving your number to a client that you had hit it off with. What are you up to? Are you trying to get into this guy’s wallet or something?”

“No I’m not,” said Chantal. “What are you talking about? That is ridiculous and disgusting. I wouldn’t ever do something like that. I’m not a terrible person, Vince.”

“But you gave him your number,” said Vince. “You know how that sounds, right? You think our clients are going to like that if they ever find out? They’re going to feel left out. What if this guy talks, what if he tells people that he got the number of one of the girls that work for us and these guys start expecting special treatment from every single girl that works here?”

Chantal had to admit that Vince had a point. If people got wind of the fact that one of the callers had gotten the number of one of the girls they would start to think that they could get the number of some other girl as well. They would start to feel entitled to getting more than they were already getting simply because someone else had gotten it and this could put a lot of the girls in danger. If nothing else, they might have to face verbal abuse. That is what all of this was about. Keeping the rest of the girls safe.

She wished that she could explain to Vince in some way that Michael was not even a regular, that he had never done this sort of thing before and that he never would again. She wanted to explain to Vince that everything she was doing was perfectly safe for the other girls because Michael would never tell anyone that he had gotten the number of a phone s*x provider, especially if she told him that it might put the other girls in danger.

However, there was obviously no way in which she would be able to explain this to Vince. How could he understand that she and Michael had had a connection, that they had experienced each other in a way that few people experience anyone and that as a result they felt like this was their only shot at being happy with each other?
