It was this that allowed her to validate herself and made her feel like her job as a phone s*x operator was one that she could continue to do for a long period of time. It was worth it. It was worth it because it paid quite well, as the people she serviced were often very good tippers, and of course she got such a huge boost to her self esteem that she was able to feel attractive and sexy in spite of the fact that she was a bigger girl.

Chantal exited the bathroom and went to the kitchen where her best friend and roommate Fran was cooking something up for breakfast. “Hey Fran!” said Chantal brightly. “How’s it going?”

“Pretty good,” said Fran brightly. “Can’t complain.”

Fran had been Chantal’s best friend ever since they had been roommates together in college. In fact, over the past nine years Fran and Chantal had only spent a single year where they hadn’t been living together. It was the year right after college when Fran had gone to California to find a job. When she returned to the East Coast, she and Chantal immediately moved back in together.

Chantal remembered how grateful she had felt when Fran had come back. That year when they had not lived together had been quite difficult to go through. Chantal had been a little depressed to not have Fran around all of the time. She had gotten used to having her best friend’s calming presence around her all of the time. She had gotten used to having Fran to talk to when things got tough or stressful. Fran always had a way of making Chantal feel comfortable and safe, and she had in a lot of ways become an archetype for Chantal.

Chantal was completely straight. She had absolutely no desire whatsoever to have any kind of a relationship with a girl other than a platonic one. However, she had come to realize that the qualities that she now looked for in men were the qualities that Fran exemplified. They were the qualities that made Chantal feel safe and loved at all times. They were qualities that made Chantal feel special, as if she was worth something, as if she was truly worth the effort that must go into being friends with somebody, anybody.

What Chantal truly loved about Fran was that she listened. She didn’t just cut you off when you were trying to talk about something. She didn’t just assume that she had more knowledge about what you were talking about than you did. No, she would actually listen to what you had to say and only when you were done talking about whatever it was that was bothering you would she try to come up with a solution. A lot of the time she wouldn’t even try to think of a way to solve a problem because she would know that there were a lot of problems out there that simply could not be solved. When someone is ranting or venting, often the best thing to do, indeed the only thing to do, is to listen to what they have to say. Sometimes you just need to let the other person let it all out, let them understand that whatever they are feeling is perfectly valid. This was why Fran was so amazing. She understood when to speak and when to listen. And most of all, she understood when it was important to simply let the other person vent and not try to offer a solution.

“What’re you making for breakfast?” asked Chantal, hugging her best friend from behind. She had felt a sudden surge of affection for her roommate after thinking about all of her wonderful qualities. She had realized that she was very grateful to have Fran as her best friend.

“I’m making bacon and eggs,” said Fran. “I know I’m on a diet, but at this point I couldn’t care less. Work has got me all tangled up in knots, I can’t seem to function properly anymore because I’m so stressed out about everything that’s going on.”

“Why?” asked Chantal, concerned that her friend was feeling so down and out. “What’s wrong?”

“Oh I don’t know,” said Fran. “Corporate is breathing down our necks after that employee spat in a customer’s wings. I hadn’t even wanted to hire him, he was just part of some state program to ensure that kids get employment after college.”

Fran worked as the manager of a branch of a local fast food chain. It paid fairly well but the amount of work that she had to do and the amount of sh*t that she had to deal with sometimes made Chantal feel like she had been dealt the short end of the stick in life.

“You want to talk about it?” asked Chantal. Fran was always there for her when she needed someone to talk to, Chantal wanted to reciprocate. After all, Fran deserved to be listened to once in a while. She was so good about listening herself that she deserved to have someone listen to her once in a while as well.

“It’s all good,” said Fran with a smile. “I don’t really need to talk about it, that’s what the bacon is for.”

Chantal chuckled as her friend brought the food to the table. Fran had dirty blond hair and wore over-sized glasses. She was skinny, which only made the glasses look bigger than they already were. It was the very fact that she was so skinny that made her look so cute to Chantal. She was absolutely adorable, so much so that Chantal felt a lot of physical affection towards her.

She reached across the table and pinched Fran’s cheeks. “You cutie!” said Chantal.

Fran chortled and said, “Why the sudden burst of affection?”
