“Thank you… For what you are doing,” Elizabeth spoke before stepping in the yard and heading toward her red Mercedes.
Did she say thank you for cleaning the house or for agreeing to carry their baby? That turned on the alarm inside Alicia once again and she firmly decided to put the news about her pregnancy under the rug for the moment.
The night came and went with neither of the Wyatt spouses returning home. The next one and the one after that as well until the weekend came again and the Saturday morning sun lighted up the white walls of the mansion.
Alicia woke up to an empty house once more and a terrible pain in her stomach. It subsided a little when she threw up in the bathroom and then went to the garden to let some fresh air into her lungs.
She sat in the grass, plucking flowers from around her and tying them up together in a colorful garland. Focused on her work with the breeze as a welcoming companion to her skin, she softly spoke under her breath. “Look what we’re making, honey. I will put garlands in your hair all the time. And if you’re a boy I would make ones for the girls you will like. Or maybe not. Maybe I’ll just be jealous and buy you small plastic cars.”
“Who will you buy cars for, love?” Steven’s voice pulled her from the sweet illusion and she nearly dropped the garland in the grass. “I checked on you a few hours ago but you were sleeping so cutely that I couldn’t wake you up. I thought we could go jogging together or something.” He smiled with his adorable smile and sat on the ground next to her.
It was then that she noticed his jogging suit. “Oh, you were in my room? I didn’t notice. What did you have in mind, huh?”
“I don’t know maybe we could stop by the park and who knows…” He laid his hand on her leg and moved it up to her shirt and under it.
“Steve, no. Someone might see us,” Alicia shockingly said, trying to stand up.
“I don’t care. I’m not doing a crime.” He winked and gently lowered her body on the grass. “I’m with the woman I love and no one can object to that.” He moved his hips closer to hers and lay on top of her. His lips found their way on her neck and then lower.
“I… Steve, no! It’s tickling.” She suppressed the urge to tell him everything right there amidst the flowers and kissed his black hair. It was salty from the sweat and the running, but she didn’t care. Her hand traced his shoulders, then his neck and she brought his face up to look at him. His lips were red and his cheeks slightly flushed inviting her to cover them with her own dry lips.
They lay in the warmth of their embrace for a while, exchanging pleasures and fulfilling the thirst of their souls and bodies. Until then, Alicia hadn’t realized how much she had missed him the past week. How big the longing for his presence, for his skin, had grown. She couldn’t get enough of his tender touch and the sound of his heart pounding fast under her head.
As she placed her face on his white shirt stained with small patches of ground, she felt inseparable from his body. Like they were meant to stay like that forever. But did he feel the same thing? Would he do anything to protect her and their baby?
He shifted his body slightly and Alicia lifted her head. Her eyes met his. “Steven…”
The ringtone of his phone covered her speech.
“Just a minute. I’ll be right back.” He patted her back and rose on his feet, walking in the direction of the house.
To let him finish the conversation, Alicia retreated to the kitchen, her mind still a whirl of doubts and theories. At better thought, her whole life was like that. A huge sack full of worries, injustice, poverty and doubts. Lots and lots of doubts about everything and everyone around her. By the time Steven entered the kitchen, she had already washed the few dishes in the sink and was focused on putting them neatly in the dryer.
“It was a colleague from work. It’s a mess there these days.” He sighed and opened the fridge.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Alicia said.
He opened a bottle of soda water and drank nearly a half of it before coming to stand next to her.

“Can it be fixed?” Alicia looked at him.
“As the things stand, hardly. But I’ll keep trying, dear. We don’t want our child’s legacy to crumble down all at once. I would never allow that,” he spoke firmly and Alicia instinctively ran a hand over her stomach.
The sound of the bubbles forming on the surface of the water ticked in Alicia’s ears all through the day, keeping the memory of Steven fresh in her mind. She didn’t want to let go of the moments they shared and kept them close at thought every time she went on doing some stuff around the house. With one thing and the other, night already blanketed the sky and the smell of baked cake and pastries spread in the air. Alicia’s nose picked it up in every room she entered. It seemed that Steven and Elizabeth did, too as he followed her up the stairs and briefly whispered that he would be in his study the whole night.
“I’ll bring you some of the most delicious cookies and a huge slice of cake,” Alicia whispered back, while he gently laid a hand on her ass. She jumped in surprise and waved him goodbye.
She served everything to Elizabeth who dined at the table and then excused herself. She left two plates with pastries and a cake on Steven’s table as well and quickly left the room after a quick kiss. The idea of staying in the study without his wife noticing passed her mind, but she chased it away, wanting to give Steven some time to focus on his work. Then, as every regular night, she closed the door of her room and slowly started to prepare for bed.
