Chapter 1

Rochelle was crying but in the rain no one really noticed the tears that were streaming down her face. She was soaking wet and the rain that was falling from the sky was icy cold. Yet she did not care. Her insides were a lot colder than everything else. She needed to get to the hotel. She needed to get to the warmth of that place. Her boss, Alice, would help her. She knew she would. She knew that no matter what happened, Alice would help her to find out what could be done about her situation.

She didn’t know what to do. She didn’t know how she could get past all that had happened. After all this time… how could Seth do that? She didn’t know how she would even be able to talk when she got to the hotel. She didn’t know how she’d be able to tell her boss all that had happened without breaking down completely.

She wondered if Alice would even be able to understand her due to how utterly upset she was. Would she be able to tell her boss coherently all that had happened?

She tried to think about it. She tried to order all of the things that had happened. Perhaps if she ordered everything in her head she would be able to better understand all that had happened.

She thought about it for a long time but the pain was too much. How could she think of something like this and not break down? It was making it difficult for her to think straight. Still, Rochelle needed to do it. If she wanted to tell Alice what had happened, if she wanted to make it easier for her boss to help her, she would have to do this.

And so, Rochelle started to play back the events of the day. She began to think about all that had happened since the beginning of the day, because if she approached that one moment that had caused her to feel this way from a distance she might be able to think about it without breaking down completely. It was the only way she would be able to process all that had happened.

Rochelle was tired. It had been a long day of work. Working at a hotel had its perks. She got great tips from the clients, she got to enjoy the amenities sometimes if she was as discreet as possible, and the pay was not bad at all. She thought that she might be able to think about moving up in the ranks if she had gotten a little bit of experience. She thought that this job might be able to allow her to improve her life significantly, something that she had not thought she would be able to do before.

Now, however, she was tired, and all of the perks the hotel offered her had stopped mattering. Now all that mattered was that she got home and took all of her clothes off and snuggled naked with her boyfriend of five years. Seth was extremely important to her. They had known each other since freshman year, and they had decided to get together at their graduation. That was when Seth had managed to work up the courage to actually tell Rochelle how he actually felt. She had been glad that he had done so. If he had not said it, she might not have been brave enough to tell him that she felt the way that she felt. She simply wasn’t the kind of girl that made the first move, she always needed the man to do that. Hence, she was glad that that was the case.

Now, they had been living together for three whole years. She loved coming home to him, especially after a long day at work. She loved it because he made her feel so calm and loved, he made her feel comfortable and relaxed after the stress and chaos of having to deal with her rich clients, the people that stayed at the hotel.

She had gotten groceries on the way home. She had thought that she might cook. Usually, Seth was the one that cooked because his job as a freelance music producer allowed him to work from home. Since he was the kind of person that did things for others, he took advantage of this and always made dinner for Rochelle and him. She would always come home to a delicious home cooked meal, and Rochelle really appreciated this. It made her feel so special, it made her feel like she really mattered to him. She was glad that he was such a good person. He always made her feel like she was the center of his universe.

Hence, this time around she wanted to be the one to put in the effort. Even though she was tired after a long day at work, cooking for Seth and spoiling him a little would make her feel good about herself. Watching him eat food that she had cooked for him instead of food that he had cooked for himself was the kind of thing that would make her feel really good about herself indeed, and so she decided that this was what she was going to do today.

She put the key in the lock and turned it. She wondered what Seth would be doing right now. She hadn’t texted ahead to tell him that she would be cooking today because she had wanted it to be a surprise. Instead, she had left work early, asking her boss Alice to let her off so that she could make something nice for her boyfriend. Alice was a very understanding boss so she had allowed Rochelle to leave without making a fuss. Rochelle was an excellent worker, she was the kind of person that would put the extra effort into her work in order to make everything work as well as it possibly could.

Rochelle opened the door and entered her apartment. Seth was nowhere to be seen. She assumed that he would be in his work room, working on the latest project he had received. He was a very good music producer. He had a way of knowing exactly what the client wanted and doing it the way they would prefer without having to be told what to do. It was an innate talent and Rochelle was so proud of him for being able to do that.

She put the groceries in the kitchen and went to the work room so that she could tell Seth that she was home. However, he wasn’t in his work room either. He wasn’t in the living room watching TV either. She figured that he might be in the bedroom, perhaps slacking off and sleeping which was something that he tended to do when he was feeling lazy and had a lot of work to do. Seth procrastinated a lot, especially when he had more work to do than usual. Rochelle didn’t mind at all. On the contrary, she found it extremely cute that he did this. She liked that he was so honest about who he was. It made Rochelle feel like she could be the same way, like she could be honest about who she was as well and not have to worry about what everyone else would think.

She entered the bedroom, saying “Honey, I’m home!”

She hadn’t paused before entering the bedroom. After all, who would do a thing like that? It was her own bedroom. She shared it with her boyfriend and they were very comfortable with each other’s bodies. They didn’t really hide anything from each other at all, so they never knocked before entering the bedroom. They were the kind of people that allowed each other to feel completely comfortable no matter what they were doing.

If Rochelle had knocked, however, she might not have had to see what she saw just then. She might have had a chance to make it so that he would have been able to hide what he had been trying to hide for so long just a bit longer, and perhaps this would have softened the blow for Rochelle just a bit. Perhaps this would have allowed her to feel a little better about herself for a bit longer.
