“Caleb? Caleb, are you here?”
Meena woke to bright sunlight stealing into the window of Caleb’s room, her face hot and slightly flushed with the contact. She wasn’t used to this much sun. In Victor’s place, in Moscow, she hadn’t been encouraged to spend time out in the sun. Victor said it would brown her face and then she wouldn’t be worth as much money. Her creamy skin was one of her best selling points.
But here she was allowed to do pretty much whatever she wanted and she stretched out as long as she could make her body stretch, feeling nothing but happy. The longer she spent here, the more she started to believe that she was really here for good. That went a long way towards helping her to enjoy her life, that was for sure.
“Caleb?”
She reluctantly climbed out of bed and picked up the first dress she could find off the floor before heading out into the kitchen. If she knew Caleb (and Tyler, if he had chosen to stay), that was where he would be. Those men ate more than any human she had ever seen. She was so convinced they would be there that she almost saw them sitting at the island, but all that was there in reality was a note.
Who knew where Tyler was, but Caleb sweetly informed her that they didn’t have what he wanted for breakfast and he would be back from the store soon. He wanted to make her breakfast in bed, which was the perfect excuse for her to get right back into the bed she hadn’t wanted to leave in the first place. She sighed happily and smiled to herself and started to walk back towards the bedroom when she heard a loud, banging knock on the door.
It could have been Tyler but that didn’t seem likely. She was pretty sure he had a key and even if he didn’t, he would definitely just yell for her until she let him in. He was too impatient to just stand there knocking.
“Hello?”
Nothing, no answer except for the continued knocking, which seemed to be growing louder and louder all of the time. God, whoever it was must be cutting his knuckles all to hell with that kind of knocking. It was actually starting to make her nervous. It seemed like the only reason to do something like that was for an emergency and all of a sudden, all of the good feelings she had upon waking were gone.
All she felt now was a cold, icy fear taking hold of her whole body. She practically flew to the door, throwing it open and ready to do whatever was needed of her. What she saw was much worse than what she was expecting. It was Bella. The Bella from the night before, who had been completely ready to slit her throat with a steak knife.

There was no knife this morning (at least not one that she could see) but that didn’t make her face any less scary. She looked as excited as a kid on Christmas morning and she had some kind of a letter in her hand. She pushed it forward, making it clear that she expected Meena to take it. Once she did, Bella started to laugh, a mean, ugly laugh that made Meena shiver.
“There you go, you meddling bi*ch, that’s for you. Special delivery.”
“What is it?”
“Proof that you shouldn’t have gotten in my way. See, I have my connections, sweetheart. I figured out about you. I figured out everything about you, including where you came from. From what I learned, you had something you care about go missing before you even got out of the airport. Well, it’s your lucky day. See, I found what you lost. Now it’s up to you to get it back.”
She let out a harsh little laugh and then slammed the open door right back in Meena’s face. She looked down at the letter in her hands, afraid to open it and afraid not to. Whatever was in that envelope, it was going to change everything.
