Chapter 4

The first venue was at a location that she had never seen before and she didn’t think that there was ever going to be a way to fill the stadium that was completely large enough to fit her entire hometown. She looked up at the ceiling and stared in baffled amazement as she arrived with the trucks to set up, as per the request of Becca. She wanted Lucy to get a look at what it was going to be like for them to set up the stages, get all of the background ready, and everything that would be necessary for the musicians and for the entertainers that would be performing with them as well. It was a whole affair and it was much more than just a man sitting out on a stage with a guitar.

She felt overwhelmed looking at everything and she couldn’t get the smile off her face as dozens of crew members started to spread out, unloading the truck and getting crates and pieces of equipment ready as they started to carry out their various tasks. It was easy to see that they had done this hundreds of times, if not thousands of times.

“This is incredible,” Lucy said to Becca who was watching her crew members working with the speed and pace that she had inspired in of them long ago. She looked at Lucy with a pleased expression on her face.

“I’m glad that you’re impressed,” Becca said with a laugh. “They’ve been running through this for a month now. They should really be able to do all of it with their eyes closed by now. I expect perfection from them and they haven’t let me down yet.”

“I never had any idea that this much work went into a performance,” Lucy said with a baffled expression, finding it hard to hide what she was thinking.

“That’s the point of all of this,” Becca assured her. “People find it amazing, but they don’t have the first idea what goes into it. That’s part of the magic of it all.” Becca let out a sigh and watched as her foremen made sure that everything was running smoothly so that she didn’t have to worry about it. Everything was delegated out so that Becca and Lucy were basically standing around enjoying the performance. “Do you have a boyfriend, Lucy?” she asked after a moment of silence.

“No,” Lucy said with a soft smile. She didn’t know what she had at this point.

“Good,” Becca said with a ruthless tone in her voice. “Tours are hard on relationships. People on the crew tend to get together and the usually end up causing trouble for themselves, having affairs, cheating on girlfriends and boyfriends at home, and all sorts of depressing stuff happens. It’s really sad. By the end of the tour, people are always broken up or divorced.”

Lucy kept that in mind. All she could think about right now were the dark thoughts that were going through her mind about Violet and James. She didn’t know a thing about them and she didn’t have a clue about what kind of relationship they had, but she wanted it to end by the time this tour was over, too. She wanted all of it to end and for James to be left with her. Sure, that was a terrible and horrible thing to think, but it was what she wanted.

When the show started to really get under way, the sets and props of the whole performance started to come out. It was something marvelous to behold. The wardrobe department was in full swing and everything around her began to look more and more magical with each passing second. Her heart pounded with excitement and anticipation as she looked at all of it. Dancers and back up singers started to get ready for the performance. Everything here was overwhelmingly full of work and efficiency.

“Enjoying the view?” Lynn asked, coming up behind her. She spun and looked at Lynn who was definitely in her full professional attitude. She reminded Lucy of a general strolling the battlefield and inspecting the soldiers getting ready for war.

“This is so incredible,” Lucy said with a smile on her lips. “I never thought that there would be so much work involved in this.”

“Just years of preparation and anticipation,” Lynn let out a heavy sigh and shook her head. “We have two more shows in the city and then we’re off Boston. You’re going to be riding in the command wagon with me. We’re going to be making sure that everything is going smoothly as the concerts go on. You’ll have to make sure that your bags are up to the command wagon with me before we leave New York City. Talk to Patrick and he’ll make sure that all of your stuff gets packed away with us.”

“Do you need me to do anything until I run the checklist?” Lucy asked, looking at the stuff in front of her that she was supposed to go over when the concert was over. Right now, that was all that she had to do. It made her wonder what she was forgetting while she looked at all of it.

“Nope,” Lynn told her with a grin. “Enjoy the show and try to stay out of the way. If anyone needs help, feel free to jump in and give them a hand.”

“I will,” Lucy assured her.

“I don’t doubt that you will,” Lynn said with a smile on her lips before her phone started to ring and she was pulled away to answer it.

Becca was also moving on to something else, putting out fires starting all around her. Lucy just sort of stepped to the side and looked out at the stadium that was starting to fill up. Vendors were done setting up all of their stuff and making sure that the shirts, hats, and other items for sale were all stocked and ready for the coming masses of people. Lucy wondered when that was going to happen and as she stared out at the stadium, she watched as the people began to fill up the seats, making the whole place look like it was crawling with the thousands of people that started to flood into the stadium.
