She said, trying to stay positive. She rubbed his shoulders. “You’re freezing, and you’re exhausted. Take an hour and rest.” She cut him off with a kiss when it looked like he was going to protest. “You won’t be able to find him if you collapse and freeze to death out there. One hour, that’s all I’m asking.” “One hour.” He agreed and lifted the corner of the sleeping bag so she could crawl under with him. Settling against his side, she reached out and flicked off the camping stove, not wanting to poison them while they were trying to rest. He laid his head back against the sleeping bag, closing his eyes as he pulled her firmly back against his chest.

“Wait, wait,” she said, sitting up and pushing him off of her. “Don’t you hear that?” Listening together they heard the sound of a long yowl in the distance. “That might be Henry.” “Either way, it’s an animal hurt.” Luke said and got to his feet, pulling on his clothes. Seeing the question in her eyes he said, “I can hear them, I don’t need to shift to find whatever’s out there.”
Once he was dressed he quickly slipped on his boots. “Be ready when I get back.” He told her simply and slipped out of the tent, zipping it back up after him. Rebecca shimmied her jeans back up her thighs, crawling out of the sleeping bag to fix the buttons of Luke’s flannel, double-checking that her bra wasn’t visible through the gaps between buttons. She stood ready by her makeshift medical center, waiting for whatever Luke was going to bring back. Her flashlight was propped up but only provided a soft glow of light so she flicked on the camping stove, hoping the flame might brighten the tent a little. Minutes passed by slowly, but soon Luke was moving through the flap of the tent, Henry cradled in his hands. Her heart dropped as she spotted smears of blood across Luke’s shirt.
