A few days later, Serena and Teddy were relaxing on the porch together after a leisurely dinner. They felt no rush to get to the bedroom anymore. Several romps over the weekend had them both fairly satiated in that regard. Edward had quickly decided to take a few extra days with Serena in North Carolina, knowing his business functioned entirely without him. Teddy instead had made himself comfortable in the home that would one day soon also be his.

As they talked about wedding date possibilities, Serena heard her phone go off in her pocket. Pulling it out, she saw a number that rarely called. It could only mean something was wrong at the inn. When she answered, a timid sounding young woman responded on the other end.

“There’s a Miss Daphne Kim here to see you and Mr. Summerfields,” the girl chirped out. “She’s um, waiting at the front desk with me.”

“I’ll be there in a jiffy!” Serena said as she hung up the phone and hurried out to the cart parked outside.

Teddy, hearing everything, ran after her. When they arrived at the inn, they parked on the side of the building and ran to the main entrance. Serena only half-tried to be composed as she went to move this wildfire away from the inn’s guests.

“Does she know?” Serena hissed under her breath as they walked through the lobby to where Daphne stood.

“Probably,” Edward admitted in a whisper.

“How?”

“I told Patrick.”

“When?”

“While you showered.”

“Why?!”

“He’s my best friend!”

They reached the front desk where Daphne stood with arms crossed and a stern expression. Both Edward and Serena tried to feign a smile. The front desk clerk looked a little frightened.

“Thank you, I will take it from here,” Serena told the girl as she scurried off to be anywhere else.

Serena wished that she could run away with her employee.

“Hello, Daphne,” Edward greeted her with a polite and sterile tone.

“We need to talk,” Daphne growled as she looked at them both.

Serena got a housekeeping key and led them all to a spare room on the second floor where the least amount of guests could hear them. Resting above the offices and below the empty regal suite on the third floor, they were all glad to be away from prying eyes.

Daphne paced in front of the sofa in the room. Serena perched herself at the foot of the bed, while Edward stood close by. Purposefully, Serena didn’t move to touch or look at Edward in hopes of not upsetting the frantic woman further as she gripped her designer clutch with stark white knuckles.

“I had just driven up from a lovely weekend in Malibu with friends, and you weren’t in your usual seat! Come to find out, the board had called the meeting to ask me to resign! They said I no longer reflect the image the company wants to have for all future endeavors. I mean, I have been upset a time or two, but that was not a big deal! To top it all off, Patrick announced your big news at the meeting! I couldn’t freaking believe him, so I had to come ask you for myself as you stay out here in this hillbilly nightmare! Are you actually marrying this sad little girl?”
