“I found it,” Teddy said. “It was in the grass.”

He smiled, but Serena was in shock. She could see his body through the tailored suit shirt. A voice in her head begged her to reach out and touch him, but he was still cold and soaked to the bone. Getting him a towel, she came back and helped him get dry. He began to unbutton his shirt.

They both stared each other down. Their breath became hard and measured as it became clear what they wanted and needed from this night. Edward took a step closer to her, pushing a stray curl from his eyes as he cupped her face in his hand.

“I think we need to get you out of these clothes,” Serena told him.

“Let’s.”

“I think we’re going to have to clean ourselves up.”

They both worked to get themselves together. Serena tied up her hair in a silk scarf and put on a chemise as Edward found fresh boxers for himself after taking a quick shower. They cleaned up the bed, and got between the sheets together. Now in their pajamas, Teddy pulled Serena close to him under the sheets. He whispered in her ear, and it seemed to fill the room.

“What if we never left this place?” Teddy asked.

Serena left her eyes closed, and this way she could see in her mind’s eye how he must look. She could see his bright green eyes illuminated in the faint moonlight that slipped past the closed curtains.

“What are you proposing, Teddy?”

“I never want to leave this bed, Serena. This feel too good. You said yourself that you could live here. We can just live the rest of our lives here, and let other people deal with the businesses in America. We can have ten kids here, and I can get fat.”

Serena laughed, “Couldn’t we do the same thing in North Carolina? Could we not do the same thing in Sonoma?”

“It won’t be the same… but I guess so,” he finally told her.

Reaching for the arm wrapped around her, Serena pulled his wrist to her lips and kissed the pulse point that went right to his heart. He sighed, settling further into the mattress as Serena heard him softly begin to snore. With the new white noise marrying the sound of rain outside their little domicile, Serena closed her eyes. For the first time in weeks, she slept well.
