She was invincible.
He was hers.
The knowledge was primal and undeniable. She wanted to claim him, as she realized he had just claimed her.
But she didn’t say the words. She couldn’t find her voice.
When he finally raised his head and pressed a soft kiss to her lips, whatever she had seen in his eyes a few moments ago was gone, hidden, shuttered.
Still, she smiled.
“Perfect,” he told her, and she told herself that she could be happy with that.
She laughed, and he rolled off her, turning to hold her.
“I think that’s the word,” she said, when she could finally find her voice again.
“Do you want me to go back to my room?” he asked, and she shook her head immediately. She didn’t need to think about that.
“No. Stay with me.”
So he did, and she found more pleasure that night than she had ever found before in her life.
“You’re back! Finally! If you say you can’t meet me for lunch, I will just come down to your office and drag you out myself.”
“I can meet you for lunch. I want to, I have so much to tell you!”
“Great, I’ll be there in half an hour.”
“That’s not lunch…”
“See you then, bye!”
Diana hung up and shrugged. She could make it work. She could make anything work, really.
Her phone pinged, and she grabbed it, expecting it to be Alex, but hoping it would be George.
She smiled when she saw that it was George.
Dinner tonight?
Miss me? She didn’t mind sending that back.
I miss you, Diana.
Diana sighed.
Dinner tonight. My treat. I insist.
Diana grinned when he just sent a smiley face back, but she was determined that it would be her treat.
She managed to get away early for lunch. Alex was already waiting for her.
“Finally! Now come in here, have your beer, and tell me all about everything.”
Diana sighed and settled down.
“I see it. You slept with him, didn’t you?”
Diana didn’t bother to deny it. There was no point trying, anyway. They told each other everything.
“And how was it?”
“I’ve never… I can’t even. Seriously, I can’t even. I just can’t even. He’s so… He’s so attentive, Alex. And so… so aware of how I feel. Of what I feel. He’s so focused on me. I’m not giving you any more details, but…”
“No wonder you have that dopey look on your face. Well, score, girl!”
Alex raised a glass and Diana laughed as she clinked her glass to it. She would have half the beer and regretfully waste the rest because she was going back to work, but it felt like the kind of day when a celebratory beer was really warranted.
She felt like she was floating on a cloud.
“It was amazing. He took me to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and we went for walks by the river, and we went shopping – I bought him a tie.”
“What did he buy you?”

“Lots of things, I think. I’m not even sure. I tried saying no, but there’s really no point trying to say no to him. If he wants to buy you stuff, he’s going to buy you stuff. It’s fighting a losing battle.”
“And you’ve still got the Porsche?”
“I do. He said he’d get my car back for me at some point, but… Apparently there’s a lot of work to be done.”
“I bet there was. Well, every girl needs a sugar daddy at some point. You’re in your twenties, might as well make the most of it.”
Diana tried to hide it, but Alex caught the look.
