Chapter 9

Diana stood in front of her door and took a deep breath.

“Come in.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

So she opened the door, and they both walked inside.

It looked just like she had left it, but it felt as if her world had changed in the time that had elapsed.

“Would you like a drink?” asked Diana, terribly unsure of herself.

George looked at her, those blue eyes so steady, and smiled.

“No. But if it’ll make you feel better, we can have one.”

“I… I don’t know. It’s been… I haven’t…”

“Diana, what are you trying to tell me?”

It came to her in a flash that she sounded like a clueless virgin.

“No! I mean, I have… But…”

Why couldn’t she find words? She used to be able to speak in sentences.

“Sit, Diana. Let me get you a glass of wine.”

Grateful, Diana did sit on the couch, but she found that she didn’t know what to do with her hands. When he came back with a glass of red wine in each hand, she took hers and was glad for something to hold. He sat down next to her, and raised his glass.

“To new memories.”

She smiled and nodded, and when he smiled back at her, some of that knot of tension loosened a little bit.

She could do this.

“Tell me.”

Diana sighed.

“I usually do things in order. Organized. Even in dating, I’ve never been impulsive. I don’t know how to… I don’t know how to navigate this.”

“Sometimes, the best things in life can’t be planned.”

“I know. But that’s never stopped me from trying to plan it. I like to have a plan.”

“Diana, we’re having a drink. I have a room next door. I hope that I won’t be spending the night there, but if you’re uncomfortable in any way, I will.”

“I… I want you to stay.”

“Then I’ll stay.”

Before she could tie herself up in knots again, he plucked the wine glass out of her hand and set it aside, and pulled her closer to him.

“I’ve wanted to do this ever since I set my eyes on you. But it was too soon. You would’ve been spooked.”

“Oh,” whispered Diana, and she closed her eyes as he traced her face with his fingertips. His arm was around her waist. He was so close to her.

She couldn’t look at him, but every molecule of her was intensely aware of his closeness.

“Diana. Look at me.”

She opened her eyes, even if her eyelids felt too heavy, and she sighed. His eyes were on her. His face was so close to hers. She could feel the warmth of his breath on her. She wanted…

“George,” she whispered, and his eyes were drawn to her lips. He traced the shape of them with his fingertips, drawing the moment out almost unbearably.

“You’re beautiful.”

Her lips parted, but she couldn’t say a word.

Diana wrapped her arms around him and kept him close, her heart beating against his, each as wild as the other.

Everything roared. Everything whirled.
