Chapter 8

Maggie landed back on solid ground with a soft thud. With the force of the impact she should have felt her landing reverberating in her ankles but she felt no pain at all. Quite the contrary. She felt good. No, it was more than good. She felt amazing. She had wondered since she was a little girl what it would be like to let go of all of her inhibitions and just fly, but she had decided long ago that it was something that would never be possible for her.

She had listened to her parents lectures year after year, listened as they fed off of each other’s fear about what might happen if she was reckless and revealed herself, and she had allowed them to instill in her a belief that hiding who she was (almost to the point where she was denying the dragon inside of her all together) was a necessity of her existence. It hadn’t occurred to her that there might be another way, not even once.

But when Levi had told her what his plan for the evening was, it was like a window inside of her mind spontaneously burst open; a window she hadn’t known existed at all. In just a matter of moments he made it clear to her that her parents’way wasn’t the only way. He made it clear that there was nothing wrong with her being a shifter and that there were other shifters out there who thought that as well.

Levi and Hudson had shown her that she could live her life with a kind of freedom she had never imagined possible, at least not for her, and even now, after shifting into her human form, she felt a gratitude for them that she would never be able to repay.

She felt that, and she felt something more than gratitude as well. What she had just experienced had acted on her like a drug. She felt fuzzy but at the same time felt like she had more clarity now than she had ever gotten close to. Her whole body tingled with life, with possibility, and she lifted her face up to the sky and breathed in deeply, hoping that this feeling never went away.

Her eyes were shut tightly but when she opened them she saw that the clouds were just beginning to clear and underneath them lay a blanket of stars thicker than any she had been privileged to see. She began to laugh, delighted the way a little girl might have been, and spun around and around, still wanting to feel the wind wrap itself around her body for a little while longer.

She was still stark naked and she should have been cold, but she didn’t feel any chill at all. She felt almost hot, her body was so warm and she knew without thinking exactly what she wanted next. She knew what would make this night completely perfect. She felt Hudson and Levi land behind her before she heard them.
