“We’ll have the best medical care here by tomorrow afternoon. You need not be worried in the least, Addie,” Seathan assured her. “Come on, let’s get you to bed.”

“I like the sound of that,” Addie said, wiggling her eyebrows.

The next day, Romy called to ask Addie to lunch. She wanted to take her to a café outside of the castle, which thrilled Addie. She hadn’t been out of the castle much since she’d arrived because she’d been too busy planning her Coronation and learning how to be a queen, which was surprisingly more work than she’d thought. Her mother had warned her.

Romy linked her arm with Addie’s as they walked out of the castle followed by two body guards. Addie looked back at them and asked, “Why are they following us?”

“You’re the new almost queen, and you’re pregnant. Seathan is very protective of you,” Romy said with a smile.

“No one knows I’m pregnant yet,” Addie said, “but I get it. So how far is the café?”

“Not far at all,” Romy claimed. “We can talk on the way. We’re less likely to be overheard as we’re walking than when we’re sitting in the café.”

“Oh sure.”

“Seathan said you’re a little worried about the pregnancy and the birth,” Romy stated, giving Addie the opportunity to continue the conversation.

“Yes, a little. First pregnancy is scary enough, but to be the first human to give birth to a dragon is incredibly daunting,” Addie said, shaking her head.

“I bet it’s like any other birth,” Romy said with a shrug. She squeezed Addie’s arm and smiled at her. “Don’t worry, Addie. My brother will have every doctor in the world here if that’s what will make you comfortable.”

“He said the same thing,” Addie laughed. “What was it like? When you gave birth?”

Romy sighed with contentment. “Well, it was no picnic, I’ll tell you that. But it was worth it.”

“I’m sure.” Addie did not sound convinced.

Romy laughed. “Honestly, it hurts, even with the drugs. And good lord, girl, make sure you get the drugs!” Addie laughed at her joke. “With all the medical expertise my brother will have here for you, you’ll be fine. Even if this is a first.”

“Thanks, Romy. I feel a little better,” Addie told her. She actually did feel a little better. As they walked in silence, each lost in their own thoughts, Addie thought about their decision to announce the pregnancy at the celebration after her Coronation. She would, of course, tell her parents when they arrived, and she would insist that her mother make the trip back when her due date was imminent. Her mother had to be there, no questions.

Addie’s little chat with Romy over lunch made her feel even better. She told her stories of her childhood with Seathan as an older brother, and she told her about her child and husband. Addie loved learning about their family from someone other than Seathan; Romy told the embarrassing stories she could tease him about later. Addie returned to the castle much more at ease than when she had left it.
