Unlike them, she took her time to approach them, watching as the instructor Ryan hired help Emily onto the horse. It was Emily’s first time on a horse, and surprisingly, she wasn’t the least scared. Kayla, however, was even though this was the third time she would go on horseback.
She wasn’t one to hate adrenaline, but she wasn’t a fan either.
“Ready?”
“Not really. I haven’t done this in ages.” She laughed, her eyes leaving Emily for the first time.
“Don’t worry, I got you,” Ryan whispered in her ear as he came to stand behind her. He placed his hands on her waist as she grabbed the saddle. His arms followed her body as she hopped onto the horse, his fingers tracing her sides, making a chill run down her spine. He was doing everything intentionally, he knew well enough how her body reacted to him, and he was enjoying every second of it.
His hands left her body as fast as they came. He left her alone as he went to hop onto his own horse. From the corner of her eyes, she saw the instructor behind Emily, holding her in place, making sure she wouldn’t fall off of the horse as they rode.

Her daughter was smiling, engaged in a conversation with the man. Looking closer at him, Kayla noticed he was older than she first expected with white hair outlining his head. He looked happy to ride with Emily, probably enjoying the colorful stories she was narrating.
“Please, lead the way, Mr. Conner.” Ryan motioned for the old man, who immediately took off in a gallop down the pathway.
Kayla had forgotten how free it felt to feel the wind blowing in her hair at such intensity. She had forgotten how good it was to feel the sun on your skin as you galloped. But she remembered now.
Her heart was beating fast, pumping blood through her veins, supplying her entire body with waves of adrenaline. Her lips curved in a smile on their own, her eyes closing for a fraction of a second as she processed the mixed emotions.
The activity did her well. It reminded her how beautiful life tasted. How much she was going to miss everything on this earth. But most of all, it reminded her that she should not die before her heart stopped. She needed to fight, if not for her life, at least for making the most of what remained of her days.
