As he said that, Kayla’s lips parted while a breeze of cool air washed by them. She knew her father was watching them, but she was more concerned with what Ryan was saying.

In the back of her mind she knew where he was going, she’d already figured out his intentions. But she somehow refused to believe that. It seemed too magical and surreal to be true. How blessed could she be in one year, after all?

But she didn’t have the time to doubt it too much because Ryan kneeled on one leg in front of her and grabbed her hand. He looked at his daughter for a second, then back at Kayla, their gaze intertwining like they it had so many times before.

“Kayla Rogers, I love you like I never thought I was able to love. You mean the world to me, in fact, you are my world. During these past months, you taught me what love was, what kindness meant and how we can fight even after we’ve fallen. You are truly everything I ever desired or hoped I would have.

I know that how we met and how we fell in love is as bizarre as everything else in our lives. But that doesn’t mean it’s not true. On the contrary, it makes everything so much more special.

And so, Kayla—” He took a deep breath in and slid the little ring he had in his pocket out, its rock glistering under the sun. “Will you marry me?”

Kayla’s hand shook, she looked at him with tearful eyes, her gaze traveling between him and the baby she had in her arms. Standing there, watching the most important people in her life, she realized why it had all happened.

She realized that everything in her life, every tear she’d ever shed, or cry she’d ever uttered, was to lead her there. She was finally getting an answer to all those times she’d asked ‘why?’. It had all been so she could meet this wonderful man, and to hold her baby. It was so she could help her mom heal, and so she could find her purpose.

Indeed, it had been a tough road, one that’d had a lot of ups and downs, but none of that mattered anymore. She was happy and in love.

“Yes!” she finally said, her shaky hands extending while she watched him slip the diamond ring onto her finger.

At that exact moment her daughter laughed while she moved to kiss Ryan, the father of her daughter, and her future husband.

The end.
