Chapter 11
Kayla was still in a daze as she exited the hospital’s through the huge glass doors. She was smiling but her brain wasn’t particularly there. In her mind, she was still in the doctor’s office, hearing her child’s heartbeat. Her daughter’s heartbeat.
“Told you I was right!” Ryan said as he pulled her closer, planting a kiss on her head. Smiling, she looked up at him, feeling her heart grow, welcoming more love for the man in front of her. She had no idea when it had all happened, but somehow along the way Ryan and she had arrived here, in this fantastic place where they shared something more than they’d ever expected.
“I’ll call it a lucky guess,” she teased him, trying to suppress a smile and look as serious as possible.
“Is that how it’s gonna be Ms. Rogers?” He asked, a teasing smile plastered against his lips as he stopped, pulling her closer to him so that they were now inches away from one another.
“Maybe?” They were now getting closer and closer, their lips merely a few inches away from one another. Just as they were about to kiss, Kayla felt something in her stomach. Something she’d never felt before, but she knew exactly what it was.
Pulling away, she gasped, her hand going to rest on her belly.
“What is it? Is there anything wrong? Should we go back inside? I—” Ryan was already panicking, watching Kayla with concerned eyes, trying to figure out what was wrong. Kayla couldn’t help but feel amused by his sudden concern.
She grabbed his hand in an attempt to stop him from rambling. Smiling she placed his hand on the exact same spot where she’d felt the baby’s kick a few seconds ago, hoping that another would follow and that this time around Ryan would be able to feel it as well.
“I’m fine! The baby is fine. I just felt her first kick.” Kayla was radiant, and so was Ryan. Breathlessly he looked at her, and then at her baby bump, hoping he could feel something as well. And he did.
Just seconds after her first kick came her second, and this time around he was there to feel it. The pressure he felt against his palm was light, gentle and he could swear he could see her shirt lifting a bit. Ryan couldn’t describe what he was feeling exactly, the emotions were too much to describe, but he was in bliss without a doubt.
But their minute didn’t last long, because as they were standing there, in the hospital’s parking lot, Ryan’s phone started ringing. The familiar ringtone filling the air around them, grabbing their attention and making them both groan.
“Yes?” Ryan said, slightly annoyed as he pulled away from Kayla, his attention now focused on the phone. Kayla could tell it was something important by the way he frowned, nodding whenever the person on the other end of the line said something.

Sighing, Ryan rubbed the bridge of his nose as he nodded. “Fine, I’ll be there shortly.”
Tucking his phone back into his pocket, Ryan turned towards her. She already knew what he had to say, and although she felt slightly disappointed by his need to leave, she knew he had to at some point. During the last few days, Ryan had dedicated his time to her, spending each and every moment by her side, during and after their little trip.
The day after their trip, Ryan had spent it at home, not wanting to leave her side after the big revelation they’d made to both their mothers.
Kayla couldn’t help but laugh whenever she remembered the way their mothers had reacted when they told them about their choice to be together. To both their surprises, it turned out that their mothers had been betting on how long it would take before they got together.
Saying they were shocked, would be an understatement, both Ryan and she could barely believe their eyes when Meredith went to hand Tania a hundred dollar bill, upset about losing that bet.
“I have to go. I won’t take long though, I just need to sign a few papers.”
She didn’t want to go back home. Meredith and her mother were surely going to interrogate her about their getaway. They’d tried doing so the day before, but Ryan had been there to save her.
“Can I come with you? I’ll wait for you, maybe we could go back home together?”
“You are afraid of our mothers aren’t you?” he questioned her with a sly smile, looking at her with an amused expression. Sighing she nodded in defeat.
“You just don’t know how many questions they’re going to ask. I mean our mothers alone are annoying but together, they are—indescribable!” she exclaimed, making Ryan laugh. He looked at her with a bemused glance.
“Come on. We can go grab dinner after.”

Walking back into that building, Kayla had a weird feeling of déjà vu. The sound of her steps as she walked on the marble floor of the reception brought back memories she was better off forgetting. She couldn’t help but recall that awful day of her interview.
How funny it was. She had been there four months ago, seeking a job, and now, she was pregnant with and dating the very owner of the company.

Indeed, life was funny, but she didn’t mind it. All those moments and all those painful events led her to where she was now. And she couldn’t be happier.
“You know, you never told me why you got turned down at your interview? Not that I mind, I like you much more by my side,” he cheekily said as he held her hand, leading her to the elevators at the other end of the room.
Thinking back to that day, Kayla contemplated telling Ryan the truth. She knew that telling him would mean bringing him trouble. He was going to pick a fight with that horrible man without a doubt, and she knew that she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if he were to get in trouble for it.
Smiling, she looked at him, knowing that one day she would have to open up about what had happened that day, but she hoped that when she did, they would be in a much more private environment, where she could try and tame his temper.
“It’s a long and unpleasant story. But hey, it’s a nice day, let’s save the story for some other time.”
