The night wasn’t as clear as either of them would have wanted it to be, the sky starless and full of clouds. From the front of the house, they could see the outline of the grayish bodies that roamed the sky, slightly illuminated by the light they hid beneath.
A storm was brewing, and there was no way to deny it. As Ryan waited for Kayla in front of the house, he wrapped his arms around himself, holding his jacket closer to his body to prevent the wind from penetrating through his navy collar shirt. He took a deep breath as he thought about the arrangements he’d made for the weekend, feeling proud of himself.
As he sat there, leaning against his car, he couldn’t help but overthink how he’d gotten there. Never in his life had he put so much heart into any kind of relationship, let alone an unofficial one. If anyone would have told him years ago that he would be there in that exact spot, he would have laughed and shrugged them off. Because frankly, he never gave a fu*k about anyone. No one had ever managed to mark themselves in his life, let alone make him even think about them twice. Although many had tried. But their shallowness had been more than enough to push him away.
But what was astonishing was that Kayla had never even tried to get his attention. In fact, her sole purpose had been to cure her mother and make sure that she had many more years to live. In fact, Ryan came to the conclusion that her purity and determination were the traits that had made him fall so hard.
Just as he was done thinking about the matter at hand, he saw the front door open, the light from inside the house contouring the fine lines of her body, hidden beneath the large oversized jacket she was wearing.
With a grin on her face, she approached him at a sprint. She was obviously happy, radiating as she planted a kiss on his cheek, happy to see him.
“So, what’s this all about?” she asked, looking at him like a kid ready for her treat. He shook his head and smiled, raising a brow as he did so.

“It’s a surprise.” He planted his hands in his front pockets, feeling proud as he saw her smile disappear. She was playing at being annoyed, although her excitement still shone in her eyes.
“Come on now. You know I’m curious!” she tried to argue, looking at him dead in the eyes.
“Yes, I know. I also know that curiosity killed the cat, so you better hop inside the car before that rule applies to you too.” Kayla rolled her eyes and puffed
“I hate you,” she said between partially parted lips as she entered the car.
“There’s a very thin line between love and hate, love,” he said with a chuckle closing the door behind her before entering the car as well, his body welcoming the warmth inside.
