That thought gave him an idea. He wanted to explore what they had. He wanted to know more stories like that. He wanted to know more about her. He wanted to consume their weird relationship, and allow it to burn him completely.
And to do that, he needed to work for it. And he knew exactly where to start. And he needed to immediately leave if he wanted to start right away. He knew she must have been disappointed, and she had every reason to be. But it would all be worth it. She would forgive him in no time.
A few minutes after he walked out of the room, fresh and well groomed. Ready to clear the way out so Kayla could get out as well. He chuckled as he thought of how silly they looked, sneaking out of each other’s rooms like teenagers. She was pregnant for God’s sake, what difference could having s*x make?
Soon enough they weren’t going to have to sneak around any more, not with what he had in mind. Not if what he was thinking of wend well.
“Mrs. Rogers!” Ryan called as he saw Tania come inside the house.
“Ryan hey! Have you seen Kayla? I searched for her everywhere, but she’s nowhere to be found.” Ryan felt amused, if only she knew.
“No. I haven’t. But we both came in together yesterday so she’s fine. Maybe she went for a walk.” It was obvious that her mother was a bit skeptical. But she decided to keep her doubts inside. A wise idea if one had to admit.
“Okay then. Why did you call me?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest while eyeing him curiously. Ryan suddenly felt intimidated, no longer looking at Tania as the mother of his employee. She was more than that now, and he felt the burden of that clearly. He wondered if Kayla felt the same way around his mother. But then again, why would she, she was impossible to dislike.
“I—I wanted to ask you something. About Kayla.”
“And what is that?” Ok, this was going to be harder than he imagined. He now knew that for a fact. How was he going to ask about their family trip without sounding suspicious? He didn’t want them to know anything about their relationship until he cleared it with her first.
Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair and pursed his lips for a second, before an idea popped into his mind.
“You know how we were supposed to go to find out the kid’s gender in a week? I’m sure that’s making her anxious and excited. So I thought maybe I could do something nice for her.” Yep, he made out an awful excuse. Now he was more than sure that she questioned their relationship. Stupid him, he should have just asked her. But no, he had to act all smart and boyish and go for her mother.
“And?”
“Well, she told me about a countryside vacation. I thought you could tell me where you went back then, I think she would like to revisit that place.” Inwardly he sighed in relief, that conversation turning out to be harder than expected.
He was unsure how to describe it, but at that moment, her mother’s eyes softened, a spark entering her eyes as she looked at him. She smiled and nodded, probably reading through his gesture perfectly. And if she did, she decided once again to remain silent, and simply enjoy the fact that her daughter was getting the attention and love she deserved.

By the end of the day Kayla was more than sure her mother and Meredith were doubting last night. It was obvious from the way they looked and whispered whenever they thought she wasn’t looking. But why would they question her relationship with Ryan? It wasn’t like they’d seen or heard anything from either her or Ryan’s side that would give them the merest clue about what was going on.
It was confusing indeed and pissing her off more by the minute.
“Okay guys, knock it off. Is there something you’d like to tell me?” she finally said, getting off the white couch and dropping the pillow she’d placed between her legs. She looked at both women with a raised brow, amazed by how silent they became once she’d faced them.
She inwardly rolled her eyes and waited for a response. “Nope. We were just talking about going to sleep. It’s getting awfully late. Right, Tania?”
“Yes dear. Come on Meredith.” It was incredible. Both their mothers were acting awfully strange. As if they had suddenly become teenage best friends who had found yet another boy band to crush over. Sighing, she watched them ascend the stairs, still whispering as they walked to their rooms.
But Kayla did not care anymore, she was in the mood for some ice-cream. Yes, that would do her well. Just as she was about to exit the living room and walk to the kitchen her phone beeped from inside her front hoody pocket. It was rare for anyone to text her, it wasn’t like she had friends waiting on every corner to greet her, so she was pretty surprised when she heard it.

Sliding her finger across the screen, her brows furrowed as she saw Ryan’s name flashing in front of her.
Get dressed. Meet you in front of the house in twenty minutes.
P.S. wear something comfortable@ XO-Ryan.
That day was getting stranger and stranger by the moment. But it wasn’t anything that she disliked. No, in fact, she was rather excited for Ryan’s arrival, eager to know what he had in mind. It had been a long time since a guy had last organized anything for her, and she kind of missed it.
She was unsure of what to wear, however. She knew she had to be comfortable, as per his text, but she also wanted to look good. Maybe shine and radiate as pregnant women were supposed to.
