Chapter 6
“Cal, get up! You have to get up! Candace is going to be here any minute!” Faydra shook him awake and was greeted by a groggy set of blue eyes.
“Uh, what?” He tried to lift himself off the couch slowly and wiped at his eyes, trying to focus on what Faydra was saying.
“We have to go! We slept too long! It’s almost seven and Candace can’t find you here,” Faydra insisted.
Cal smiled but let her pull him up off the couch. “I really don’t think she’ll mind—she likes me.”
“I don’t think she likes anyone having s*x on her couch.”
“True,” Faydra threw his pants at him from where he’d left them in the corner of the break room. He pulled them on quickly and grabbed his shirt.
“Okay great, this was fun,” she said pushing him towards the front of the store.
“Yes, it was,”
Faydra unlocked the door, peaking out to ensure that Candace hadn’t arrived.
“Wait! I’m not leaving without your number again.” He pushed his phone towards her.
Faydra sighed, clearly anxious. She quickly typed her phone number into his contact list and handed it back to her.
He kissed her quickly on the lips and smiled, “Okay, see ya later.”
She smiled slightly and waved before disappearing behind the door to the shop.
She let herself take a few long gasping breaths inside the closed door. She felt reckless, but loved it. If Candace had found her in there with him sure, she would have been disappointed but she knew she probably wouldn’t be fired. Instead, she’d forced him out more for her own sanity.
She felt excited but also dirty and wild by acting this way with him. The last few months of being so confident and sure of every move she made was being unraveled by one man and she wasn’t sure how to handle it. So when she’d woken up wrapped naked in his arms, she’d immediately panicked.
Were things moving too fast with a man she wasn’t even entirely sure about? She couldn’t answer her own questions except with an undeniable attraction for the man and a feeling in the pit of her stomach that he was worth it.

Flirty text messages flooded Faydra’s phone for the entire day and she fought warm cheeks and wet panties and the thought of what they’d done the night before. Needless to say, she didn’t inform Candace of what happened, only mentioning that she’d given him her number and they were in contact. Every buzz of her phone sent shivers through her, excitement at the thought of more time spent with Cal, especially now that they’d talked about their expectations.
Around four o’clock in the afternoon her phone rang, his name and number popped up on the screen.
“Hello?” she answered.
“Hey, it’s Cal.”
“Hey, Cal…” she responded sarcastically.
“Listen—can I send a car for you for lunch tomorrow? I thought you could come to the office, I could show you around and we could eat. You could tell Candace it’s a work lunch if you want—I can try to convince Elite Boutique to join our customer list,” he joked.
She chuckled but something unsettled her in the offer,.“I don’t know if she’ll buy that, but I’m sure she won’t mind if I step out. But I can drive over to you, you don’t need to send a car really…”
“Oh, no. Don’t worry about it. That way you don’t have to park or any of that and the driver will take you right to the lobby.”
“Okay…what will we be eating?”
“Excellent question—I was thinking sushi. What do you think?”
The same gut pain shot through her. “Sushi’s great!” She tried to sound genuine.
“Perfect. So tomorrow expect the car at, say 11:30. Just let me know if anything comes up and we can reschedule no problem.”
“Sounds great,” she said.
“Awesome, I’m excited, see you then!”
“Okay, bye,” she said as she hung up the phone. Lunch at his office was a strange second date venue, but Faydra thought she could get past that knowing how much he loved his company and wanted to share that with her.
That wasn’t what was bothering her. Instead, it was something she’d forgotten in the time they spent together. The money. Coming from a poor family and having to work twice as hard for every dollar she made because she was a black woman, Faydra hated pointless spending. And although he didn’t advertise it or act like that kind of man now, she considered that it might only be a matter of time before he did. He had it all: the money, the car, the condo, the expensive suits—and she had no intention of being a trophy on his arm.

Sushi and luxury cars with drivers were nice things but completely unnecessary for a casual lunch in the office. She worried about it for a few more minutes before deciding that it was just his way of being nice and if the money concerns continued she could mention it to him if she thought she needed to.

The car and driver arrived at the exact time they were supposed to. Candace had practically pushed Faydra out of the shop when she heard that she was going out with Cal again. The drive to his office wasn’t too far, and Faydra found that it felt completely different to travel through the city in the backseat of a town car. The tinted windows and perfectly conditioned air made her feel like she was in a spaceship flying towards Cal’s workplace.
They arrived in the front loop of a tall building and the driver parked and walked around to open her door. He escorted her, without a word, to the lobby, and towards the front desk.
“A guest for Mr. Dennison.” Faydra could practically feel the vibrations coming from his deep voice as he spoke to one of the women at the rounded desk. The woman looked up from her computer and glanced from the driver to Faydra. The woman’s eyes flitted back and forth across Faydra’s top half that was visible behind the desk and gave a disapproving look.
