Chris was a prime example, abandoning her at time when she needed him the most. It would have entailed too much responsibility. He would have to hold down a steady job to provide for the child. He would have ended up hating her and the child for having trapped him that way. So she had to be rational as nothing about Harvey’s intentions were amorous in any shape or form. Yet she had a good feeling he would make a wonderful father.

The little she knew about Harvey showed him to be an ambitious, headstrong man not to be taken lightly and nobody’s fool. She would be lying if the thought of sleeping with him and saying it’s his, hadn’t appealed to her but she could never be so deceitful, her conscience would have torn her apart. Besides Harvey was rich, he could more than afford a DNA test so the only person she would be fooling was herself. She would never have stooped so low as to trap a man with a baby. She noticed that the right hand Harvey had used to punch out Dirk had gotten discolored and started to swell.

“Harvey don’t go yet let me ice your hands please, it’s a long drive back and I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you because of me.” He parked the car and dutifully followed her inside the house.

“What made you knock him out like that?”

“You were in a jam and I intervened.”

Clearly he was irritated with her for asking, his tone said change the topic, leave it alone, his face showed he wasn’t happy about the situation. She placed the ice pack on his hand and nestled it carefully. She tried not to take offense at his abrupt manner.

She was glad for his timely intervention, he prevented an almost ra*e, as much as she wanted to believe she was tough, would she have had the strength to fight off such a sexual predator? Would Dirk have stopped if she said no? If she screamed loudly would someone in the vicinity have heard her cries and rushed to her rescue. These were questions she would never have the answer to. Besides what’s done was done, she was still too busy battling her worries over her pregnancy to dwell on her almost ra*e. In the future, she would be more vigilant and careful in her surroundings.

“Are you still worried about him?”

“Worried,” she repeated softly. She couldn’t bring herself to admit how scared she had been. No doubt Harvey thought she was a complete idiot but everything seemed to always be happening so fast.

“I hate that son of a bi*ch for thinking he could lay a hand on you and get away with it.”

“It’s my fault, don’t you see.”

He didn’t see. “Don’t make excuses for the bas*ard, I’ll make it so that he never finds another job in this town again.”

She was deeply engrossed in watching him. His brows knitted together while he was deep in thought. His wide lips encased startling white teeth, now that he frowned his lovely dimples had all but disappeared. Yet his formidable look was just as appealing as his warmest smile. Trish stared up at him as if he was her favorite milk chocolate, and she was hungry. What in blue blazes was wrong with her now?

“What’s on your mind love?”

“I couldn’t help thinking how adorable you look when you frown.” He looked at her as if she was demented. She now regretted speaking what was on her mind. She swiped her hand across her forehead, why couldn’t she think before she spoke. “Of course, it’s official by now I’m a horrible judge of men.”

He shrugged. He was through discussing the matter. The entire situation was incomprehensible to him. Trish had no idea how much the situation had deeply affected him. It felt like he came nearly close to losing her. That bas*ard would not have just abused her body but her mind as well. Trish had him both exasperated and crushing like a school boy at the same time. Now that he thought about, he was falling for this woman and he didn’t know much about her past. However, he knew deep down that he needed to show her that he was going to be stuck in her future. The one thing he did know for sure, that he could bet money on, was that she was a damn fine, good looking woman. Any man would be proud to have her by his side.

He found it hard to stay away from her, he had all the money in the world, but very little to offer her in the way of a family. This was why he stayed away from women, they always wanted too much. In the end he would be the one to end up hurt, when they left him for someone else who could offer more but for Trish he was willing to take that risk if she would let him.

Two hours had passed since they arrived at her house, Trish had put on popcorn and they watched a romantic comedy on the television together on the couch, eating and laughing in compatible harmony. When the movie had ended, she removed the ointment covered bandages she had placed on his hands. It was remarkable that most of the swelling had gone down. She massaged the area, admiring the strength and the muscles it led to. She felt like he had her in the palm of his hand. She was fascinated by him. He made her feel safe and secure. She moved closer to gain a little more warmth from his body heat. Trish thought about her baby, she pictured it suckling on her bre*st while Harvey held them both nestled deep within his arms.

He couldn’t stop staring at her, he knew he should leave, now wasn’t the time to be thinking about making love to her especially after what had happened earlier. He gave her a faint smile as he drew her into a hug.

Betsy was just busting at the seams to get Trish alone so she can drain her of all the juicy details. They chit chatted as a group for a little bit, then the guys said their goodbyes and made their way out. The girls watched them drive off into the distance. The moment they were out of sight Betsy closed the door and set her arms akimbo.
