Prologue
The large brown envelope that had once hosted his medical records now lay to the side and looked as if it would fall off any second. Its contents strewn in disarray across the surface of the wide black mahogany desk. His discontent showed, his heart beat raced, his chest felt tightened and constricted. He felt like he was losing his mind.

Every year on the anniversary of the accident he nursed some hope that the results would change but they remained the same. He would never be able to have children. His sperm count was so low it was practically nonexistent. Having spent a small fortune visiting different specialists he had finally reached his limit. Seven years to this day he had been in a car accident. He couldn’t remember anything that had happened before or after the accident. He could only watch the highlights on YouTube.
The footage of his accident had over six million views and counting, it was such an unprecedented event, many didn’t make it and he was fortunate to be alive. Turns out the accident had occurred when a driver who was very tired, started speeding to get home when he swerved to avoid what he thought was a pet dog, but it was just a figment of his imagination caused by fatigue, like a mirage a dehydrated man would see in the desert. He had been driving minding his own business, when the negligent drivers’ vehicle tail spun into the opposing traffic, causing a multi impact pile up with cars hitting each other, one such car rammed into his with such force it caused his car to roll continuously down the side of a hill until it crumpled into a tree. It was a miracle he had survived. His body had been ejected from the car seat and he was tossed about helplessly inside the car until he was pinned in by the metal door to the tree.
The firemen had been afraid to draw him out because of the unnatural angle of his body, it took them hours to get him out. He had to be rushed to the intensive care unit at the nearest hospital, which was miles away. The resulting shattered glass had ruptured his testicles. In surgery the doctors had tried to save as much as they could but the damage had already been done, it was irreversible.
His family and friends had held a constant prayer vigil by his bedside. They were overjoyed when he came out of the drug induced coma. So happy that he was alive. How would they feel if they knew that years later he would regret ever making it out of that car alive? That he would rather have died on that operating table than have to suffer being impotent. Would they feel sympathy for him? He wanted no one’s pity.
How he agonized over the way his life was going, how hard it was to see his friends settling down and knowing he could never feel that familiar bond between a father and child. He reached for the decanter of brandy, and poured himself a glass, then he tilted his head, threw it back in one gulp and poured some more. He felt hypnotized by the brandy as he watched it swirl in the clear glass, every movement showed how the burnished gold color reflected light, how it mirrored eyes red rimmed, a face streaked with tears, a reflection of a man in the deepest of despair. It was this image of a broken man that shattered his mind, in the fury of his anguish, he threw his glass against the wall, the contents splashed out like the rays of the sun. Now was the time for him to break free, he would no longer have to wait in vain, or be held in bondage at the mercy of his emotions. On that very same day, he made a vow that going forward he would focus solely on his career and never look back.
