Chapter 1

Trina was still trying to figure out what Thursday dinner was going to be as she walked out of the elevator into the basement parking lot. She had been thinking about it the whole day and somehow, eight hours later, she was still not sure what was going to be on the dinner table. And she was not about to heat some soup or chili from a can again.

She was still scrolling through her phone when she heard someone call her name out loud, startling her. She almost dropped the phone in her hand. She turned around, her hand on her chest and looked at the security guard standing behind her holding a yellow envelope in his hand.

“Damn it, Darryl,” she said under her breath.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said and she shrugged as she threw her phone in her bag.

“Well, you did but I can’t blame you. I was a little in my head there.”

He raised an eyebrow over the other.

“I did call out for you. Twice,” he said matter of factly and she shook her head.

“You did? I didn’t hear you.”

“I did, which was why I had to resort to calling you by your first name. And I sincerely apologize for that,” Darryl said and Trina exhaled loudly.

She knew exactly why she had not heard him. He must have called out for Mrs. Crews Anderson, something she was still not used to hearing. Especially since the people who insisted on using the new name were at her new firm. Back at her old firm, Hart, Hamlin, and Matthews, people still called her by her first name even after her marital status changed. Learning to answer to her new name was still a learning curve that she was yet to master.

“I have a feeling that is to do with you calling me Mrs. Crews Anderson,” she said and he shook his head.

“That is your name.”

Trina exhaled loudly.

“It is.” She smiled at him. “So, what can I do for you?” she asked.

“Your assistant asked me to bring you this.”

He handed her the envelope and she raised an eyebrow over the other.

“What is it?” she asked.

“A delivery man brought it for you from HHM just as you left and I thought I would bring it to you as I brought you these,” he added as he reached into his pocket and pulled out her keys from his pocket.

“My hero,” she said in a soft voice. “My head must be in my…” She shook her head as her voice trailed off. The only word she had to finish her sentence was ass and she knew better than to use that particular word at work. She looked up and smiled at Darryl. “Thank you. And let’s just use Trina for now.”

He nodded.

“I cannot promise I will but I will try,” he said, smiling.

“That’s all we can do, right?” she pointed out before she walked onto her car. She got in and took a long deep breath. She had half a mind to open the envelope but something inside her told her otherwise. She tossed the envelope on the passenger seat and started the engine before she began backing out of the lot.

A smile played on her lips when she thought of the joke that was probably going on in the office at that moment. She could have sworn that Darryl had most definitely shared the name joke with the rest of his friends.

It had been two years since Trina officially became Trina Crews Anderson, but every time someone called her Mrs. Anderson, she was still not sure if she should answer or not. Even the people who called her Mrs. Crews Anderson were not so lucky to get a response from her. That was how she always took so long at government offices especially the DMV. And that was a major disappointment considering she was a lawyer. It had been a learning curve for so long and it had become a joke in her new firm, Crews and Associates, mostly because it was a first for a name partner to not know when she was being addressed.

By the time she got home, it was just a little after six and Trina had decided on salmon. It was quick, it was easy, and it was delicious.

She was relieved when she got home and found that Axel’s car was not in the driveway. That could only mean one thing. He was not home yet.

She walked into the house and put on some music before she rushed upstairs and took a quick shower. She then held her hair up in a curly puff and put on a pair of sweat pants and a V-necked t-shirt. She made her way down to the kitchen and quickly cooked and set the table. She had always loved fish because of how quick it was to prepare. She had just taken wrapped up the salmon in aluminum foil when she heard the front door open and close. She looked up and smiled at Axel who was carrying his jacket in one hand and his laptop bag in the other.

“Hey, you,” she said in a soft voice.

“Hey.”

She walked round from behind the counter and looked at him.

“Someone looks like he needs a chardonnay really bad,” she said as he walked up to where she was. He put the bag on the counter and slipped an arm around her waist to pull her close.

“A bourbon would be more like it,” he said in an exhausted voice.

She forced a smile and ran her fingers through his hair.

“That bad, huh?” she asked and he nodded.

She held the back of his neck and closed her eyes as she kissed him softly.

“Or that. That works so much better than a bourbon,” he said when he pulled away. She was smiling as she looked into his eyes.

“You sure have a way to make everything sound better.”

“What can I say? It’s what a good husband does.”

She put a hand on his chest and gently tugged at his tie, pulling him downwards to kiss him again. She pulled away and leaned her forehead against his.

“You always say the sweetest things.”

He smiled.

“Something smells good,” he said and she pulled away taking his jacket from him.

“I made salmon for dinner.”

He raised an eyebrow over the other, surprised.

“Salmon?”

She nodded.
